Defender Baseball Plays Two Twinbills

GAMETIME… Dordt will travel to Midland on Saturday, April 20 for GPAC baseball and will face Briar Cliff on Wednesday, April 24.  The Briar Cliff twinbill was originally scheduled for Friday, April 19 but was postponed due to poor weather and moved to Carroll, Iowa due to unplayable fields. The doubleheader on Wednesday will start at 4:00.  Results of the games can be found at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete and also at https://twitter.com/dcathletics. 

SCOUTING REPORT… Briar Cliff is 4-8 in the league and 7-25 overall and is looking to snap a three game losing skid.  The last wins for the Chargers were back to back decision over Nebraska Wesleyan and Midland.

Josh Penrod is batting .328  and has scored six runs for the Chargers while Matt Fiechtner is batting .320 with a team high 32 hits and seven doubles.  Dylan Romo has knocked in ten runs and Angel Talamantes has a team high 11 runs batted in and has five doubles—second on the team to Fiechtner’s seven.

Gary Davis tops the team with a 3-4 record and he has a 5.21 earned run average and has thrown a team high 38 innings.  Zach Watts and Dylan Romo each have wins and have thrown 35 and 34 innings respectively.  Davis leads the team with 41 strikeouts and Watts has 29.

Midland is 5-7 in the conference and 22-18 overall and they have won four games in a row with conference wins over Briar Cliff, Dakota Wesleyan (2) and Morningside in non-conference play. 

Midland is batting .258 as a team and is led by Vinnie Orsi with a .348 batting average and he has 13 doubles with 32 runs batted in.  Zach Kinsella is batting .337 with 35 hits and 14 runs batted in and Dylan Steyer is good for ten doubles and a .330 batting average and two homeruns with 22 runs batted in.

Dylan Stockton is the staff ace with a 5-2 record and he sports a 2.28 earned run average with 40 strikeouts and 43 innings.  Tyler Brungardt is 3-6 with a 3.56 earned run average and has 36 strikeouts in 55 innings.  Rob Wheeler is 4-3 with 35 strikeouts and 37 innings.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender baseball team is 5-18 overall and 3-9 in the GPAC with five games remaining after these two doubleheaders. 

Dordt is batting .230 this season with Jon Holwerda leading the team with a .311 batting average and he has 19 hits, two doubles and eight runs batted in.  Nathan Fraley is batting .308 this season with five doubles and nine runs batted in and he has two homeruns with a team high 18 runs scored.  Jason Wapnick is batting .278 and has seven runs batted in and Dustin Brisel has a team high six doubles.

Lucas Carls, Ben Van Kekerix, Jake Slings and Mark Nyhoff have carried the bulk of the pitching load in conference games this year.  Van Kekerix is 3-2 in five appearances and 30 innings pitched with a 4.50 earned run average.  Carls has a 1-1 record with a 4.44 earned run average with 19 strikeouts and 26 innings of work.  Nyhoff carries a 4.66 earned run average and has thrown 29 innings and Slings has a 5.87 earned run average in 23 innings and he has 16 strikeouts in five appearances.

THE SERIES…Dordt swept the doubleheader with Briar Cliff last season 14-3 and 7-3 in Sioux City on April 20.  The Defenders and Midland have played 28 times and Dordt trails the series 19-9.  Dordt lost the GPAC twinbill last season 2-0 and 4-0 on April 21 and Midland swept a non-conference doubleheader on March 19 by 5-0 and 7-4 margins.

NEXT UP… Briar Cliff is scheduled to host Dakota State on April 20 while Dordt will face Morningside on Tuesday, April 23 in non-conference play in Sioux City. Midland will play York on April 23 in a non-conference, nine inning contest.
