Dordt Soccer Opens Men's Season Friday

SCOUTING REPORT… Mount Mercy was 12-7-2 in 2012 and finished the Midwest Collegiate Conference 4-1-1. The Mustangs were eliminated in conference tournament play by Grand View in the finals.
The top returning scorer for Mount Mercy is Veselin Karagyuarov as he tallied eight goals and had two assists for a team that featured three players with either eight or nine goals scored. Also returning for the Cedar Rapids, Iowa based school is Harrison Burgess, a goal keeper who allowed 20 goals and made 46 saves in over 1,377 minutes of action.
Mount Mercy outscored teams 37-32 last season and outshot teams on goal by a 165-104 margin.
DORDT COLLEGE NOTES… The Defenders were 10-8-1 last season and finished the GPAC season with a mark of 6-3-1. Dordt lost in a quarterfinal round GPAC Tournament contest to end the 2012 season.
The Defenders outscored teams 47-31 and outshot teams 149-132.
Dordt returns its top 2012 goal scorer in Eric Grootenboer, a Chatham, Ontario native, found the net 11 times and also assisted on four goals. Brady Van Holland was the leading assist man for Dordt last season with eight and scored six times and earned all-GPAC honors at the conclusion of the season. Steven Talsma also scored four times and had two assists. Jon Brinkerhoff played all 1,742 available minutes in goal and allowed a 1.60 goal average per 90 minutes played and he also made 92 saves.
THE SERIES… The Defenders are 1-3 against Mount Mercy since the series began in 2009. Dordt traveled to Cedar Rapids last year and lost a 3-0 decision. The Defenders gave up a pair of goals to Sid Beck in the third and 49th minutes as the Mustangs took control of the contest. Derick Sackey fired three shots on goal for the Defenders but Dordt was outshot 16-10 overall and 8-4 on goal.
NEXT UP…… The Defenders will host a pair of men’s soccer games on Friday and Saturday, August 30 and 31. The Friday game will be against Davenport (Michigan) at 3:00 and the Defenders will host John Brown (Arkansas) at 1:00 on Saturday.
