Pizza Ranch Soccer Classic Opens Friday

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host Davenport (Michigan) and Graceland (Iowa) on Friday, August 29.  The men’s game with Davenport gets underway at 3:00 and the women’s game will start at 5:00.  The games can be heard on a webcast at www.dordt.edu/athletics and results will be posted on www.dordt.edu/athletics ; https://www.facebook.com/dordtdefenders and https://twitter.com/dcathletics .

SCOUTING REPORT… This will be the season opener for Davenport after compiling an 8-9-1 record last season.  Davenport had built an 8-4 record before dropping five decisions and being involved in a tie in the other contest. Last year’s team was outscored 32-26 and held a sight 107-106 shots on goal advantage.

The top returning scorer for Davenport is Stuart Collins with three goals and five assists in 2012.  Dino Duratovic collected four assists and had a pair of goals last year and Mirza Harambasic played 860 minutes in goal and had 47 saves and 23 goals allowed—a 2.41 per-90 minutes played average.

Graceland is off to a 2-0 start with shut out wins over Grand View and Bellevue.  The Yellow Jackets are rated #13 in the pre-season coaches’ poll and went 17-3-1 last season with a ten game winning streak from mid-September to mid-October.  This season Graceland has outshot opponents on goal by a 15-8 margin and they hold a 28-16 overall shots advantage.

Stephanie D’Cruz has a team high three goals this season and Stefany Castano Cardozo has made eight saves while registering a pair of shutouts.

Last season Graceland outscored teams 40-22 and return three of its top four goal scorers from that season.  Courtney Codilla scored six goals and Sydney Nolan had five.  Sarahi Ortiz Casillas is the top returning goal scorer with seven goals and Stefany Castano Cardozo logged 1,581 minutes in goal and had a 0.863 goals allowed per-90 minutes played average. 

DORDT COLLEGE NOTES… The Defender women will be playing in their season opener after posting a 1-14-3 record.  The Defenders fought to ties with Waldorf, Mount Mercy and Dakota Wesleyan while beating AIB. 

Sarah Byron scored four goals for the Defenders and is back for her senior season.  Megan Knapper scored twice and returns and Marissa Le Duc had three assists in 2012. 

The Defender men are 0-1-0 after a loss to Mount Mercy last week.  In 2012 the Defenders were 10-8-1 and finished the GPAC season with a mark of 6-3-1.  Dordt lost in a quarterfinal round GPAC Tournament contest to end the 2012 season.

The Defenders outscored teams 47-31 and outshot teams 149-132. 

Dordt returns its top 2012 goal scorer in Eric Grootenboer, a Chatham, Ontario native, found the net 11 times and also assisted on four goals.  Brady Van Holland was the leading assist man for Dordt last season with eight and scored six times and earned all-GPAC honors at the conclusion of the season.  Steven Talsma also scored four times and had two assists.  Jon Brinkerhoff played all 1,742 available minutes in goal and allowed a 1.60 goal average per 90 minutes played and he also made 92 saves.

THE SERIES… This is the first meeting between the Dordt Defenders and Davenport in men’s soccer while the Defenders and Graceland have squared off twice in women’s soccer with the Yellow Jackets sweeping the two meetings in 2005 and 2006.

LAST TIME… This weekend marks the season opener for the Dordt women and for the Davenport men. 

The Dordt men lost a 1-0 decision to Mount Mercy on Saturday, August 23 in their only previous action to this weekend.  Dordt had a chance to tie the game late in the first half on a penalty kick that ended up ringing off the post.  Dordt was outshot on goal by a 7-3 margin. 

Graceland scored a 3-0 win over Bellevue on Sunday while outshooting the Bruins 11-6.  D’Cruz scored two of Graceland’s goals and Castano Cardoza had six saves in goal.

NEXT UP…… Davenport’s and Graceland will each play Northwestern on Saturday as the Pizza Ranch Classic continues.  Dordt is scheduled to host John Brown (Arkansas) on Saturday with the men starting at 1:00 and the women at 3:00.
