Dordt Writes: Aaron Baart is featured author

October 2, 2013

Dordt College Dean of Chapel Aaron Baart and former Dordt College Theology Professor Syd Hielema’s Vivid: Deepening Your Colors will be the featured book at the next “Dordt Writes” event celebrating books written by Dordt College authors. All are invited to share a cup of coffee and a cookie and hear Baart talk briefly at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 11, in the John and Louise Hulst Library on the campus of Dordt College.

Baart writes that many people have accepted that “a life in Christ is a paler version of a life lived well in the world, as if Jesus’ followers live in lifeless, self-denying black-and-white while everyone else gets to live in vivid colors of vibrancy and vitality. This unspoken generalization dominates thinking across Western Christianity. It’s one of Satan’s best lies and, for the large part, we’ve swallowed it whole.” Vivid challenges that way of thinking.

Focusing on the three key themes of identity, kingdom, and calling, Vivid is an excellent resource for church small group discussion, profession of faith study, new member classes, or personal reflection.

While staying true to Reformed doctrine, the authors intentionally avoided using jargon so that the book would be understood by all its readers. It is relatable and filled with illustrations and stories that focus on the story of Christ. “The book is not an instruction manual; it is an invitation. It isn’t an academic exercise; it is accessible and conversational,” said Baart.

Baart leads weekly chapels on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium that are open to the public. Hielema is the campus chaplain at Redeemer University College in Ontario. Vivid is available in the Dordt College Bookstore.
