Dordt Football Hosts Non-Conference Foe

THE FOE… Trinity Bible College is located in Ellendale, North Dakota and is 1-5 this season.  The Lions have a win over Maranatha this season and they have lost three in a row up since that win.  They lost to Valley City State on September 21, Presentation on September 28 and Waldorf on October 5.

The Lions have been outgained 907-694 on the ground and 1222-838 in the air and have been outgained on average 354-255 per game this season.  Trinity Bible has forced 20 turnovers and has given the football up 11 times.

Johnny Perry has run for 661 yards on 162 carries this season for a 4.1 yards per rush average and he has five touchdowns.  No one else has more than 19 net yards for the Lions on the ground.  Taylor Martindale is 42-110 in the air for 405 yards with two touchdowns and Braden Phillips is 33-83 with a touchdown and 345 yards.  Perry tops the team with 17 catches for 219 yards while Tanner Twigg has 17 catches as well for 157 yards.  David Rivera has 16 snags for 174 yards and Chris Wood has 11 catches for 142 yards.

Cole White leads the defense with 70 tackles and a forced fumble.  Seth Peterson is good for 64 tckles this season with three fumble recoveries.  Clint Stout has been in on 37 tackles while Daniel Rodriguez has 5.5 sacks and Rondell Tucker has 2.5.

Kalen Coats has punted 39 times for a 32.4 yards per punt average.  Other special teams highlights for the Lions include Collin Anderson averaging 14.9 yards per kick return and Coats has 11 returns for a 24.5 average.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 1-4 this season and 0-4 in GPAC play.  Dordt’s win was a season opener over Dakota State and its losses are to Concordia, Briar Cliff, Morningside and Midland.

Dordt is rushing for 214 yards per game and allow opponents 210 yards on the ground.  For the season Dordt has netted 1072 yards on the ground and 1051 for opponents.  The Defenders do not rely as much on the pass as they have 374 yards passing and opponents have 1065 passing yards.  Defensively the Defenders have two interceptions and have recovered five fumbles.  Dordt has committed 12 turnovers while forcing ten this season.

Lenard Manuel leads the Defenders with 254 yards on the ground on 53 carries and he has a 4.8 yards per carry average.  Erin Francis has 185 yards on the ground and Daniel Fennig has 171 yards.  Francis and Fennig average 6.4 and 7.8 yards per rush respectively and Thomas Newman has 163 yards on the ground on 81 rushing attempts.  Newman is 12-31 passing with two touchdowns and 208 yards total.  Sam Verhulst has 11 catches for 245 yards and a 22.3 yards per catch average.  Darryl Van Grouw has five catches for a  14.6 yards per catch average.

Seth Vande Voort has been in on 59 tackles this season and has five tackles for loss.  Jake Atkinson has 44 tackles and Cole McClain 42.  Sean Quinlan has 26 stops and Micah Applegate 21.  Applegate also has five tackles for loss with a quarterback sack.  Cam Pitre and Quinlan each have an interception.

Barry Dykstra is 7-8 on point after attempts and is 1-4 on field goals.  Heath Bonestroo has punted 27 times for a 39.8 average and has a long of 57 this season. Trai Pickney has returned nine kicks for a 17.1 average and Fennig has six returns for a 19.2 average.

PREVIOUSLY…Last week the Lions hosted Waldorf and lost by a 13-2 margin.  Trinity outgained Waldorf 155-77 last week.  Trinity actually gained 211 yards on the ground but lost another 120 for a net of 91 yards.  Johnny Perry ran for 136 yards on 47 carreis and had a long of 12 yards.  Taylor Martindale was 6-15 passing for 63 yards and Tanner Twigg caught four balls for 44 yards.  Coats punted eight times and had an average of 33 yards per punt.  Trinity Bible had the ball inside the Waldorf 35 yard line three times and fumbled the football at the Waldorf five on one possession. Waldorf scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery at the goal line in the closing seconds to turn a 7-2 final into the 13-2 final.

Concordia scored on its final possession of the first half and then scored on three straight possessions in the second half to turn a 7-0 lead into a 32-0 final on Saturday.  Dordt gained 195 yards with 131 yards on the ground and 64 in the air.  Thomas Newman gained 54 yards on 19 carries and Manuel had 13 carries for 47 yards.  Vande Voort had 16 tackles and McClain 13 while Atkinso pulled down 12 ballcarriers.  Dordt’s defense 131 yards in the air and 241 on the ground.  Dordt had one interception thrown in the Concordia end zone and had a fumble early in the game inside the Bulldog ten yard line.

HISTORY… This is the first meeting between these two teams.  Dordt is scheduled to make a return trip to North Dakota next season.
