Dordt-Morningside Volleyball Wednesday

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will travel to Morningside for a GPAC volleyball date on Wednesday, October 16. The junior varsity match starts at 6:00 and the varsity match at 7:30. The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and there will be audio available online at www.dordt.edu/athletics . THE OPPONENT… Morningside is 3-6 in the GPAC and 11-10 overall and the Mustangs have won three of their last four matches. In that run the Mustangs have wins over Ashford, Mount Marty and Dakota Wesleyan. The last loss for the Mustangs is a 3-0 decision at Bellevue on October 5. The match with Dordt is the first of four matches in a row against teams either in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll or receiving votes for the poll.
The Mustangs were 7-2 in August and 1-5 in September. Morningside is 3-3 in matches so far in October.
Morningside is averaging 12.62 kills per set and allows 11.31 per contest. Morningside has a .205 kill efficiency and teams are hitting .172 against the Mustangs. The Sioux City, Iowa based school averages 17.7 digs per contest and put up 1.49 blocks per set. Sara Horn’s team gets 1.46 service aces while teams are averaging 1.07 against them.
Maggie Vondrak is averaging a team high 3.58 kills per set and she averages 3.8 digs per contest and she has a .215 kill efficiency. Gabi French adds 2.68 kills per set and Kecia Verburg is good for 2.09 kills. The Mustangs rely on a pair of setters with TyAnn Buddenhagen putting up 4.49 assists with 15 ace serves and Hannah Roberg is at 5.23 assists with 15 aces as well. Grace Chvatal tops the team with 5.01 digs per contest and she also has a team high 22 service aces.
THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 16-4 overall and 7-2 in the GPAC while holding a no. 15 ranking in the NAIA Poll released on October 8. The Defenders have won eight matches in sweep fashion and have played another four matches where they have gone the distance and are 1-3 in those five set matches. Dordt has won five matches in a row since suffering losses to Northwestern and Nebraska Wesleyan.
The Defenders average 13.13 kills per set and they have a team kill efficiency of .302. Dordt gets 2.08 points per set off of blocks and 1.47 off of service aces. Dordt averages a total of 15.55 digs per set. Dordt ranks fourth in the country in kill efficiency and 15th in kills per game.
Brooke Wolterstorff averages a team high 3.17 kills per set and has a .297 kill efficiency and also has 22 ace serves and 2.57 digs per outing. Lindsey Floen adds 2.83 kills per set and has a .416 kill efficiency which ranks 5th in the country. Floen also has a team high 1.01 blocks per outing. Jenna Horstman adds 2.72 kills per outing and her kill efficiency is .298 and Meghan Krausman is adding 1.93 kills per set with 1.35 digs. Elizabeth Kiel puts down 1.5 kills per set and along with Wolterstorff averages just under a block per outing. Kayla Broekhuis tops the team with 4.87 digs and has 20 ace serves. Kayla Gesink handles the setting with a 10.35 assist average and she gets to 2.51 digs and 1.09 kills with a .409 kill efficiency. Celaine Haan’s 26 ace serves leads the team and Jocelyn Bousema has 20 ace serves and averages 1.76 digs.
LAST ACTION… Morningside beat Dakota Wesleyan on October 11 25-19, 25-10, 25-13 behind Maggie Vondrak’s 16 kills and Buddenhagen had 20 assists. Chvatal had a team high 12 digs as Morningside had 54 digs in the three sets. The Mustangs had 44 kills and held Dakota Wesleyan to 22.
Dordt turned Dakota Wesleyan away 25-10, 25-22, 25-12 on October 9. Wolterstorff had 11 kills to top the Defenders and Floen had ten. Gesink put up 37 assists and Broekhuis got to 16 digs on a night when the Defenders had 41. Dordt outhit the Tigers 47-26.
HISTORY… Dordt holds a 14-6 series lead with most of the meetings taking place since Morningside entered the GPAC prior to the 2003-2004 school year.
Dordt won the September 18 meeting 22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 15-6. Floen had 17 kills for the Defenders and Wolterstorff put down 16. Horstman added 10 kills and Gesink had 53 assists. Bousema got to 14 digs and Wolterstorff had 11. Dordt totaled nine service aces. French put down 21 kills and Vondrak 15 for the Mustangs and Roberg totaled 29 assists. Chvatal got to 16 digs as Morningside totaled 52 digs and had six service aces of their own. Dordt was credited with eight blocks.
The two teams split their meetings last season with Dordt winning the October 3 meeting at the De Witt Gym 25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-7. Danae Geels had 14 kills and Gesink put up 53 assists. Loy Sahr and Krausman had 12 and 10 kills each for the Defenders and Broekhuis got to 13 digs. French put down 14 kills while Steffen and Vondrak had 13 and 12 kills respectively.
Morningside swept Dordt in the October 30 match up in Sioux City 25-17, 25-15, 25-21. Anastasia Ott and Vondrak put down 12 and 11 kills respectively while Megan Mounts put up 34 assists. Katelyn Schuller registered 10 kills in the loss and Gesink had 24 assists. Broekhuis got to 13 digs for the Defenders as Dordt struggled with their blocks, getting just four blocks while Morningside had nine and hit for a .324 kill efficiency.
WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… Morningside will face Northwestern in Orange City on Wednesday, October 23 and will host Hastings and Midland on Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26.
