Dordt-Northwestern Football Saturday

THE FOE… Northwestern is currently in the receiving votes category of the NAIA Coaches’ Top-25 Poll and stand 4-2 overall and is 3-2 in the GPAC.  The losses for Northwestern are to Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan but they have a win over nationally ranked Concordia to their credit in their most recent game.

The Raiders have outgained teams on the ground 1,193 to 787 and have thrown for 1,365 yards to 1,723 for opponents.

Theo Bartman has run for 461 yards for a 5.4 yards per rush average and he has a team high three rushing scores, tied with Davis Bloemendaal for the team honors.  Jessie Riley has 324 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns and Paul Hutson has a 4.7 yards per carry average to go with two scores and he has 55 rushing attempts.  Bloemendaal is 109-190 in the air for 1,346  yards and 13 touchdowns.  His favorite targets are Ben Green and Bryce Byker.  Green has 38 catches for 581 yards and eight scores while Byker has 28 catches for a 12.9 yards per catch average and three touchdowns.

Isaiah Twitty has 68 tackles and seven for loss with three sacks.  Greg Hegstad has been in 60 tackles and has an interception.  Brent Coston has 40 stops and Nate Van Ginkel has 38 tackles with an interception.

Green has returned five punts for a 17.4 yards per return average. Julian Dittman is 2-3 on field goals with a long of 35 and Levi Ettleman has punted six times for a 37.7 per punt average.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt College is 2-5 this season and 0-5 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Dordt’s wins are over Dakota State and Trinity Bible.  The Defenders are coming off a 28-0 loss to Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln last week. 

The Defenders have been shut out twice this season and have scored at least 14 points in each of their other five games.
Dordt has run for 1,439 yards this season and has allowed 1,316 yards.  The Defenders gain 272 yards per game while opponents run for 188 on average and get 231 in the air.  Dordt has turned the football over 19 times while forcing 13 turnovers.

Dordt’s defense is led by Seth Vande Voort with 74 tackles and he has an interception.  Jake Atkinson has 59 tackles with two interceptions and Cole McClain’s 50 tackles rank third on the team with a fumble recovery.  Micah Applegate has a team high two quarterback sacks and Camren Pitre has a team high two interceptions.

Lenard Manuel has 347 rushing yards with a 4.4 yards per carry average. Daniel Fennig has run for 290 yards with a 7.3 yards per carry average.  Erin Francis has 255 yards and Thomas Newman 164.  Manuel has three rushing touchdowns to lead the team in that category while Fennig, Francis and Newman all have two.  Sam Verhulst has 16 catches for an 18.3 yards per reception average and he has three catches for touchdowns.  Darryl Van Grouw has eight catches for 104 yards and has two touchdowns.  Thomas Newman is 18-44 passing for 280 yards and three aerial strikes.

Heath Bonestroo has punted 44 times for a 39.5 average and has a long of 62 yards.  Barry Dykstra handles the placekicking chores and is 15-16 on point after attempts.  Trai Pickney has nine kick returns for a 17.1 yards per return and Fennig has handled nine kicks for a 13.9 yard average.

PREVIOUSLY…Dordt lost to Nebraska Wesleyan 28-0 last Saturday after trailing 7-0 at halftime. Two early scores in the fourth quarter pushed a 14-0 lead to 28-0 and that’s how it ended.  Dordt was outgained 346-100 with Manuel gaining 40 yards and Francis 20 on the ground.  Verhulst had 29 yards on four receptions and Darryl Van Grouw had two catches for 19 yards.  Vanoy Harris had 12 tackles in his first play of the season and Atkinson had ten tackles with Vande Voort in on nine.

Northwestern came from behind early in the fourth quarter to beat Concordia 30-28.  Northwestern trailed 22-16 with 10:18 left in the game.  A Jessie Riley 69 yard run gave the Raiders the lead for good and Paul Hutson capped an 82 yard drive with a six yard plunge with 3:44 left to take a 30-22 lead.  Concordia had a chance to tie it after a 57 yard drive of their own with 1:59 left but a two point conversion was no good, preserving the win for Northwestern.  Riley and Hutson had 116 and 115 yards respectively and Bartman did not play.  Bloemendaal was 16-28 for 172 yards passing and Green had five catches for 52 yards and Byker three for 32.  Hegstad as in on 17 tackles and forced a fumble.  Twitty had 14 tackles and Mitchell Janssen had 2.5 quarterback sacks.  Northwestern was outgained 400-360.

HISTORY… Dordt and Northwestern played on November 10 last year and Northwestern won 55-7 with Dordt scoring on a David Griess reception with 6:18 left in the third quarter.  Northwestern struck quickly with two scores in the first five minutes of the game and the hosts had six first half touchdowns.  Brandon Smith ran for 116 yards and Bartman 108 for the winners.  Josh Van Kempen had 50 yards on 12 carries for the Defenders and Griess had three catches for 53 yards.  Bloemendaal was 18-24 passing for 239 yards with three touchdowns and Byker had seven catches for 99 yards.  Jordan Carlson made 10 tackles for Northwestern while Seth Vande Voort had 16 stops for Dordt and Sam Ashmore had ten.

AROUND THE CORNER… Northwestern will host Hastings on November 2 before hosing Morningside the following week.
Dordt will travel to Crete, Nebraska on Saturday, November 2 in its next contest and will be on the road on November 9 as well as they travel to Hastings.
