Dordt-Doane Volleyball Saturday

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will travel to Crete, Nebraska  for GPAC volleyball on Saturday, November 2. The junior varsity match will start at 4:00 and the varsity match will get underway at 5:30.  The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and live on the web at www.dordt.edu/athletics.   Results will be posted to www.dordt.edu/athletics and https://twitter.com/dcathletics and also at https://www.facebook.com/dordtdefenders .

THE OPPONENT… Doane is 6-8 in the GPAC and 15-15 overall after a home  win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday.

The Tigers won four sets in a row after losing four straight to Midland, Dordt, Nebraska Wesleyan and St. Francis from October 2-11.  The Tigers have lost three out of their last five matches dating back to October 19.

The Tigers average 11.72 kills per set and have a team kill efficiency of .167 and get to 13.56 digs and record 2.14 blocks per outing.  The Tigers also average 2.01 service aces per set.

Ashley Axmann tops the team with a 3.92 kill average and Abby Sorenson’s kill average is 2.4.  Emily Max is at 1.71 kills per set and Ali Jansen’s average is 1.19.  Haley Norvell and Rachel Wieser average 4.94 and 4.86 assists and Alex Winters is averaging 3.21.  Karissa Blank’s average is 4.2 digs and she has 41 service aces, second only to Julie Els’s and Ashley Axmann’s 46.

THE DEFENDERS…Dordt is 20-5 overall and 11-3 in the GPAC and has won nine of its last ten matches with the hiccup in the run a loss to Hastings two weeks ago on the road.

The Defenders average 13.9 kills per set and have a .300 kill efficiency while also getting to 15.6 digs per set.  The Defenders also generate 2.1 points per set on blocks and another 1.4 points per set on ace serves.

Brooke Wolterstorff, Jenna Horstman and Lindsey Floen lead a balanced Dordt attack with all three averaging right at three kills per set.  Wolterstorff is a shade over three at 3.08 while Horstman and Floen are at 2.92 and 2.89.  Floen’s kill efficiency percentage is .405 and Horstman is at .319.  Floen is also averaging a team high 1.04 blocks per outing.

Meghan Krausman and Elizabeth Kiel are at 1.85 and 1.63 kills per set respectively with Krausman also getting to 1.37 digs.  Kayla Broekhuis has a team high 5.02 digs and Wolterstorff has a 2.6 average.  The two are also among the leaders in aces with Broekhuis at 20 and Wolterstorff at 27.  Jocelyn Bousema is averaging 1.72 digs and has 23 ace serves and Celaine Haan leads the team with 30 aces.  Kayla Gesink runs the offense with 10.58 assists, 1.09 kills and 2.42 digs per set.  She also has 14 service aces this season.

LAST ACTION… Dordt beat Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday night 25-18, 25-8, 36-34.  The Defenders hit for a .345 kill efficiency and had 59 digs while allowing Dakota Wesleyan a .092 kill efficiency.  Horstman led the team with 17 kills and Floen had 13.  Wolterstorff and Kiel each had eight and Broekhuis led the team with 15 digs and Wolterstorff had 14.

Doane handled Nebraska Wesleyan 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 and hit .314 for the match with 47 kills and was led by Axmann with 16 kills and Sorenson had 14.  Norvell and Wieser each had 16 assists and Blank had 13 digs.

HISTORY… Dordt leads the series 23-6 after a 25-11, 25-15, 25-20 win on October 5.  The Defenders were led by Jenna Horstman’s 14 kills against one error and Wolterstorff had eight kills with Gesink putting up 28 assists.  Broekhuis had 19 digs.  Doane was topped by Axmann with 11 kills and Norvell and Wieser had 16 and ten assists each and Blank had 11 digs.

Dordt lost the lone meeting last season on September 29 last season 25-21, 20-25, 18-25, 15-25.  Max had 15 kills and Blank 13 digs.  Dordt was led by Danae Geels with 16 kills and Loy Sahr had 10.  Gesink put up 39 assists and had 15 digs while Broekhuis had 14.

NAIA POLL…Dordt College is no. 18 in this week’s poll while fellow GPAC members Northwestern and Midland are no. 6 and no. 7 respectively.  Hastings is in the receiving votes category of the poll.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… Dordt concludes the season on Wednesday, November 6.  The GPAC Quarterfinals will be played on Saturday, November 9.

Doane is scheduled to host Hastings on November 6 to conclude the regular season and they have assured themselves of a spot in the post-season tournament starting on November 9.
