Dordt Basketball At Omaha Tuesday

GAMETIME…The Dordt College Defender men’s basketball team travels to Omaha, Nebraska for a non-conference game with Grace University on Tuesday, November 5. SCOUTING REPORT… Grace is 0-2 this season with losses to Ottawa and Hillsdale Free Will Baptist. The Royals have been outscored 77.5-67 through two games and are converting 30.4 percent of their field goal attempts while opponents are making 45.2 percent. The Omaha, Nebraska based school has been outrebounded by a 48.5-46.0 average and they have made 7-30 three point shots.
Hakeem Stewart leads the team with an 18.0 points per game average and he also gets five rebounds and four steals per game with 2.5 assists. Spencer Plank has a 16.5 points per game scoring average and he has 2.5 steals per game. Jarrod Sheffield is good for 9.5 points per game and five rebounds per game. Ayotunde Akonbote chips in with 7.5 points per game.
DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 2-0 this season after a pair of wins over Valley City State and Jamestown.
Dordt is averaging 98 points per game through two games and is allowing 92.5. Dordt holds a 32-22 rebounding advantage and is converting 57.4 percent of the field goals it tries while opponents are making 54.9 percent of the shots they try. Dordt has gotten to the free throw line 70 times and is converting 84.3 percent of their attempts while foes have made 39-54 attempts for 72.2 percent success.
Kyle Lindbergh scores 27.5 points per game through two games and has a team high 9.0 rebounding average. Austin Katje averages 18.0 points per game and has converted 5-12 three-pointers and he has a 5.0 rebounding average. Dalton Franken has averaged 16.5 points per game and Tyler Wolterstorff’s average is 13.5 and Nathan Rindels is at 10.0 points per game with a team high 5.0 assists per game with 4.5 rebounds. Alex Terpstra has come off the bench for an 8.0 points per game average and he has a team high three steals.
HISTORY… Dordt owns a 6-0 series lead and won last year’s game 90-43 after leading 44-28 at halftime. Dordt was led by Cliff Warner’s 24 points in 22 minutes of play. Jordan Vogel added 12 points and Nathan Rindels and Elliott Christians each had ten points. Dordt was 30-61 from the field but was outrebounded 44-43. Grace struggled from the field with an 18-69 day and they were led by Treston Mayo with 10 points and Hakeem Steward added nine points and Tracy Sweatte added seven in a reserve role.
NEXT… Dordt is scheduled to play Davenport (Michigan) and Trinity Christian (Illinois) on Friday and Saturday at a classic hosted by Northwestern in Orange City.
Grace is scheduled to play a pair of road games on Friday and Saturday at Presentation and Trinity Bible College.
MILESTONES… Austin Katje became the 32nd Dordt College Defender men’s basketball player to score at least 1,000 points in a career this past weekend. Katje now has 1,023 points and ranks 29th all-time. Kyle Lindbergh currently has 868 points and 614 rebounds. The rebound total ranks 10th all-time as he passed Logan Kingma last weekend.
LAST TIME…Dordt came from 22 points down with 15 minutes remaining in their game with Jamestown and won 98-92. Dordt was 27-48 from the field and 6-9 on three-pointers and the Defenders converted 36-40 free throws. Dordt also had a 30-20 rebounding edge but turned the ball over 15 times while forcing 11 turnovers. Kyle Lindbergh scored 33 points while converting 12-16 field goals and he had eight rebounds. Rindels added 16 points and had six rebounds with five assists. Austin Katje converted 14 points and Dalton Franken chipped in with 11. Terpstra came off the bench to score nine.
Grace lost to Hillsdale on November 2 by an 81-80 margin. The Royals were outrebounded 50-33 and converted 30-71 shots from the floor while Hillsdale was making 30-63 shots. Jarrod Sheffield had 18 points and Hakeem Stewart knocked down 14 in the loss with five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Sheffield had a team high nine rebounds.
RANKINGS…. The first NAIA Division II basketball polls were released on October 29. The women’s poll is dominated by GPAC teams with Morningside no. 3; Concordia no. 5, Northwestern no. 7; Briar Cliff no. 12 and Dakota Wesleyan is receiving votes. Jamestown is no. 10 and Valley City State is receiving votes.
The men’s poll features Midland at no. 8, Northwestern at no. 15 and Hastings at no. 23. Morningside is in the receiving votes category of the poll. Jamestown is in the receiving votes category of the rankings.
