Dordt Football Travels To Hastings

THE FOE… Hastings opened the season with a 38-20 non-conference win over Kansas Wesleyan and have lost seven straight GPAC games since then.  Four of the Hastings losses have been by single digits and they lost a 31-28 decision to Northwestern in the closing moments of the game in Orange City on November 2.

The Broncos have run for 90 yards per game while opponents have managed to run for 232 yards against the Broncos.  Passing is a wash for the Broncos with their opponents as each gain 226 yards.

Sean Robnett has run for 212 yards and a 4.3 yards per carry average with a touchdown.  Nate Arit has 138 yards of rushing offense on 38 carries and Matt Overmiller has run 43 times for 114 yards.  Overmiller has also played in six games at quarterback and is 96-175 in the air for 947 yards with ten interceptions and six touchdowns.  AJ Palazzolo is 66-143 for 866 yards and has six touchdowns and eight interceptions.  Arit has 32 catches for 364 yards and three scores and an 11.4 yards per catch average.  Austin Curlee and Jordan Wallman have 27 and 23 catches respectively for 356 and 240 yards.  Curlee has three receptions for touchdowns.

Erik Wylie has 37 solo tackles and 48 assists with 2.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss with a fumble recovery.  Kenese Iohas 27 solo and 26 assisted stops and Jacob Claeys has a team high four sacks with 17 solo and 34 assisted stops.  Alex Gildon and Joel Grafel lead the team with three interceptions each and Dylan Hill and Garrett Griffith each have two interceptions.

Arit returns punts and has a 16.3 yards per return average and Sean Robnett handles the majority of the kick returns with 15 returns for 325 yards and a 21.7 yards per return average.    Owain Hickey is 20-20 on point after attempts and has converted 4-6 field goals.  Hickey also has punted 16 times with a 36.5 average and Brandon Bachle has 28 punts for a 36.8 average.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt College is 2-7 overall and 0-7 in the GPAC with wins over Dakota State and Trinity Bible College.  The Defenders have lost three straight since the 56-27 win over Trinity Bible on October 12.  This will be the final road game of the season for the Defenders.

Dordt gains 188.4 yards per game on the ground and allow 185.6 yards per contest.  Dordt’s passing offense has averaged 75.3 yards per game while opponents have had success for 226 yards per game in the passing game.

Lenard Manuel leads the Dordt ground attack with 433 yards and a 4.2 yards per carry average.  Daniel Fennig and Erin Francis have 328 and 320 yards respectively and both have a pair of touchdowns while Manuel has a team high five touchdowns.  Zach Barker has completed 20-40 passes for 228 yards and Thomas Newman has completed 19-49 passes for 279 yards.  Sam Verhulst tops the team with 24 catches and a 16.4 yards per catch average and three touchdowns.  Darryl Van Grouw has caught 14 passes for a 13.6 yards per catch average and has two touchdowns to his credit.

PREVIOUSLY… Dordt lost a 56-13 decision to Doane College on Saturday, November 2 in Crete, Nebraska after fighting to a 7-7 tie at the conclusion of the first quarter.  Doane capitalized on three defensive touchdowns in the game and scored four times in the second quarter and another three times in the third quarter.  Doane outgained Dordt 337-193 with Dordt rushing for 132 yards while Doane had 147 yards on the ground.  Erin Francis led Dordt with 58 yards on ten carries and Lenard Manuel had 14 carries for 49 yards.  Zach Barker was 6-13 passing and Sam Verhulst had four catches for 47 yards.  Seth Vande Voort and Vanoy Harris had 13 and 11 tackles each and JT Teixera had ten tackles with 3.5 stops for loss.

Northwestern beat Hastings 31-28 on a 42 yard pass with 2:06 left in the game.  Hastings was outgained 471-311 overall and Northwestern had 342 yards passing to 232 for the Broncos.  Arlt ran for 59 yards and Overmiller was 22-36 passing with three touchdowns and 232 yards.  Curlee had seven catches for 59 yards and two other players had four catches each.  Wylie and Grafel had 14 and 13 tackles respectively.

HISTORY… Hastings is 5-0 against the Defenders and won last year’s game 20-7 in Sioux Center on September 8.  The Broncos had 432 yards of offense and Dordt had 246.  The Defenders got 71 yards rushing by Manuel and Josh Van Kempen ran for 44 yards.  Keenan Ballage had 100 yards on the ground on 16 carries for Hastings.  Kyle Henricks was 5-6 passing for 62 yards and Pickney caught two pases for 29 yards.  John Dostal was 18-27 passing for Hastings for 281 yards.  Trevor Bohn had six catches for the Broncos for 119 yards and two touchdowns.  Vande Voort and Harris had 11 and nine tackles respectively for the Defenders.

AROUND THE CORNER… Both teams will conclude their regular seasons on Saturday, November 16.  Dordt hosts Dakota Wesleyan while the Broncos will travel to Nebraska Wesleyan.

NATIONAL POLL…The Morningside Mustangs remain the no. 1 team in the poll while Northwestern has moved themselves to no. 19 ahead of their contest with Morningside on Saturday.  Dakota Wesleyan and Concordia are both receiving votes in the weekly polling.
