Dordt Basketball At Concordia Saturday

GAMETIME…The Dordt College Defender women’s and men’s basketball teams travel to Seward, Nebraska to face Concordia in Great Plains Athletic Conference women’s and men’s play on Saturday, December 7. SCOUTING REPORT… The Concordia women are 3-1 in the GPAC and 7-2 overall. The losses for the Bulldogs are to Jamestown and Hastings by scores of 77-74 and 94-89. The Bulldogs have won three games in a row on two different occasions.
Kristen Conahan leads a team that scores 84.1 points per game with an 18.4 points per game average and she is making 40 percent of her three-point tries. Tracy Peitz adds 15.2 points per game and Bailey Morris is at 15.0. Jerrica Pearson adds 13.8 points per game and grabs a team high 8.3 rebounds per game. Morris tops the team with 47 assists this year and she has 24 steals—second on the team to Peitz’s 33.
Concordia is allowing 77.7 points per game and are getting outrebounded 38.4-36.4. The Seward, Nebraska based team converts 42.5 percent of its field goals and opponents make 44.7 percent.
The Concordia men are 3-6 overall and 1-3 in league play with an 86-81 win over Doane on the road on December 4 snapping a three game losing streak. Other losses for the Bulldogs in the league are to Morningside, Briar Cliff and Hastings.
Adam Vogt tops the team with a 16.8 points per game average and he is making 21-57 three-point tries and has a team high 11 steals. Max Wegener is good for 16.0 points per game and Robby Thomas is at 11.6 points per game and Chandler Folkerts scores 10.4. Thomas and Wegener take in 7.7 and 8.0 rebounds per game with Eli Ziegler scoring 7.2 points per game mostly in a reserve role.
Concordia is getting outscored on average 86.2-77.1 and is getting outrebounded 40.0-34.4. Concordia has committed 155 turnovers while foes have 121 through nine games.
DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the GPAC after a loss to the Briar Cliff Chargers in overtime on Wednesday night. Dordt’s losses are to Jamestown, Midland and Briar Cliff—three teams in the top-25 coaches’ poll. The Defenders were receiving votes in the most recent poll.
Dordt College is averaging 75.1 points per game and they allow 67.7 points per game. The Defenders also make 40.8 percent of their field goal attempts while opponents are making 36.5 percent of their shots. Dordt has converted just over 30 percent of their free throws and have gotten to the free throw line for 189-243 success and 78 percent. The Defenders hold a 39-37.7 rebounding edge and committed 152 turnovers to 174 for opponents.
Elise Maresh converts 53.4 percent of her field goals and averages 16.3 points per game and she gets to 4.3 rebounds per game. Kara Van Dyke is averaging 13.9 points per game and her rebounding average of 7.8 leads the team. Jaimie Kok completes the double digit scorers with a 11.3 average and she is getting 6.1 rebounds and she leads the team with 24 assists in nine games of action. Danelle Boone adds 8.8 points per game and she is 18-49 from the three-point line. Jasmin Schelhaas has contributed 6.4 point per game in five contests this season.
The Defenders are 11-1 this season and have won eight games in a row since a November 8 loss to Davenport. The Defenders were ranked no. 12 in the most recent NAIA Coaches Poll.
Dordt is outscoring teams 93.6-78.0 and has hit triple digits five times. Dordt outrebounds teams 43.8-29.3 and is converting 50.6 percent of the field goals it tries from the field. Dordt allows teams to convert 45.2 percent of their field goals. Dordt is 74-202 on three-point tries and is 265-369 on free throws.
Kyle Lindbergh averages a team high 18.4 points per game with 10.0 rebounds and he is making 59.2 percent of his field goal attempts. Dalton Franken has a 15.1 points per game average and he gets to 4.5 rebounds. Austin Katje is good for 13.5 points and 3.5 rebounds and he is making a gaudy 27-58 three-point shots for 46.6 percent success. Tyler Wolterstorff’s scoring average is 11.8 points per game and he gets 3.9 rebounds. Nathan Rindels is good for 9.3 points per game and has a 5.1 rebounding average and he tops the team with 44 assists through 12 games. David Den Herder is coming off the bench for 7.8 points per game and his rebounding average is 4.8. Alex Terpstra is good for 7.1 points per game and he has made 40.4 percent of his three-point tries.
LAST TIME… The Concordia women beat Doane 82-75 on December 4 despite getting outrebounded 47-40 but the forced 27 turnovers and gave the ball up just ten times. Peitz led the Bulldogs with 18 and Conahan had 13 while Morris came off the bench to score 12.
The Dordt women lost an overtime decision to Briar Cliff 100-92 on Wednesday night in Sioux Center. Dordt led 43-40 at halftime but Briar Cliff tied it late on a free throw to send it to overtime. Dordt was battling foul trouble and lost three players at the end to fouls, making the overtime session difficult. Kara Van Dyke and Elise Maresh had 23 and 22 each and Boone added 13. The two teams combined for 78 free throw attempts and Dordt was outrebounded 47-40.
The Concordia men led Doane 40-29 at halftime and went on to win 86-81 on Wednesday night. Thomas had 18 points and six rebounds and Vogt added 17 with Deondre White getting 13 poitns and five rebounds. Thomas also had four blockd shots in 25 minutes of play. Doane outrebounded the Bulldogs 35-27.
The Defender men needed overtime to slide by Briar Cliff 104-97. Dordt was 35-71 from the field and 31-38 on free throws and rebounding was even at 41-41. Dalton Franken had 24 points to lead Dordt and had five rebounds. Nathan Rindels scored 21 and had 11 rebounds with three assists and two steals. David Den Herder came off the bench to score 16 and Tyler Wolterstorff and Austin Katje both had 14.
HISTORY… The Concordia women lead the series 18-7 and they won two of the three meetings between the teams last year. Dordt won the first meeting on January 5 in Sioux Center, handing Concordia its first loss of the season 96-86 in overtime. Van Dyke had 27 and Kayla Broekhuis 21 as Dordt had five players in double figures and Maresh grabbed 13 rebounds. Concordia got 18 from Pearson off the bench and five other players had between 10 and 14 points.
Concordia won the February 9 meeting in Seward 87-64 as Dordt led 32-31 at halftime but the hosts ran off 56 points in the second half. Maresh had 15 and Jaimie Kok 11 while Katie Rich scored 17 for the winners as they forced 28 Dordt turnovers to make up for a 41-33 rebounding deficit.
Concordia ended the Dordt season with a 75-63 win in the quarterfinal round of the GPAC tournament on February 20. Dordt got 18 from Brianna Spronk and 12 by Boone with Van Dyke snaring 10 rebounds. Pearson scored 18 and Conahan 16 in the win. Dordt had a 42-36 rebounding advantage but was forced into 31 turnovers.
The Defender men lead the series 18-6 and they won both games last season. Dordt won 79-66 in Sioux Center on January 5 after leading 37-36 at halftime. Trevor Wolterstorff had 20 points and Cliff Warner 17 in the win. Concordia’s Joel Haywood scored 15 in the losing effort and Porter Birtell had 11 with seven rebounds. Dordt had a 32-26 rebounding advantage and shot for 60 percent success from the field.
Dordt won the February 9 meeting 84-73 behind 25 points by Wolterstorff and 15 by Cliff Warner. Austin Katje added ten and converted 2-3 three-point shots. Dordt led 47-35 at halftime. Concordia got 18 points from Phil Friedrich and 15 by Beau Smith. Dordt had a 39-29 rebounding advantage and turned the ball over just nine times.
NEXT… Concordia will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday, December 11.
RANKINGS…. The Dordt women are receiving votes in the most recent polling by the NAIA while seven other GPAC teams were included in the polling. Northwestern in no. 2; Concordia no. 7; Midland no. 10; Morningside no.12; Briar Cliff no. 15; Hastings no. 22 and Dakota Wesleyan is also receiving votes.
The Dordt men were no. 12 in the last poll while Hastings is no. 8 and Midland no. 16. Briar Cliff is in the receiving votes portion of the poll.
