Youth pastors and their college-seeking students are invited to Dordt College
January 2, 2014
Students face a barrage of conflicting messages from the media, the church, and their peers. Youth pastors have the unique role of walking alongside students as they work through these issues and form their identity in Christ.
All youth pastors are invited to learn together how to equip young people to participate in God’s mission to the world at Youth Pastor Visit Day on Friday, January 31, on the campus of Dordt College.
“We’ve structured the day to be a great experience for both youth pastors and high school students alike,” said Brandon Huisman, director of alumni and external relations. “This is an opportunity for pastors to learn together, share ideas, and find ways to practically apply what they learn to their own ministries.” For students, the day is full of activities that include a tour of the campus, meeting with professors in the fields they are interested in, and enjoying being a Dordt student for the day.
Guest speakers Hugh Halter, Jason Lief, and Luke Vander Leest will lead the day’s sessions.
Halter, the founder of Missio, lead pastor of Adullam, and author of several books including The Tangible Kingdom, will speak on “Mission Youth Ministry.” He is also the keynote speaker at the Day of Encouragement event February 1.
Lief, who teaches theology at Dordt College and has a Ph.D. in pastoral care from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, will speak on “The Monstrosity of Faith: Bonhoeffer, WALL-E, and the task of youth ministry.”
Vander Leest, who has ministered to teenagers and their families for 15 years as a teacher, counselor, coach, mentor, and youth pastor and is currently the spiritual director at Sioux Falls Christian School, will speak on “Adolescent Faith Development.”
Youth pastors who bring a group of four or more students from their church’s youth group will have their expenses covered by Dordt College.
Pastors are also encouraged to remain on campus for Day of Encouragement the very next day, Saturday, February 1. A day to inspire, encourage, and equip all God’s people for ministry, the conference highlights a large variety of well-known speakers covering topics including mission, worship, and culture.
