Basketball Hosts Nebraska Wesleyan

SCOUTING REPORT…The Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves are 1-12 this season and 0-8 in women’s GPAC play.  The Prairie Wolves beat MacMurray to start the season but have lost 12 in a row since.  The Lincoln, Nebraska based school nearly won its second game of the season on December 29 when they dropped a triple overtime decision to Iowa Wesleyan.

The Prairie Wolves score 60.2 points per game and allow 79.5 points per game.  Opponents are converting 340 percent of the field goals they take while Wesleyan is making 38 percent of their field goals.  The Wolves face a 43.8-36.8 rebounding disparity on average and they have turned the ball over 323 times this season in 13 games while forcing 232.

Felicia TeKolste is scoring 15.6 points per game and her rebounding average is 3.2 with 20 assists and 15 steals.  Courtney Cook is good for 11.2 points per game and she has a team high 6.2 rebounds per game average.  Bridget Bucher is good for 10.6 points per game and she gets to 5.9 rebounds.  Kelly Sanchez and Amanda Diaz are scoring 6.1 and 5.7 points per game.

Nebraska Wesleyan is 8-5 in men’s play and 3-5 in the GPAC with wins over Concordia, Briar Cliff and Dakota Wesleyan.  The Wolves, under Coach Cam Schucknecht, have several narrow losses including a two point loss to Northwestern, a three point overtime defeat against Hastings and a ten point loss to Morningside.  The Prairie Wolves have lost two games in a row currently and have done that twice this season.  Wesleyan also has a five game winning streak to its credit this season.

Trevor Johnson scores 19.2 points per game and grabs 6.5 rebounds per contest.  Johnson, a 6-5 post player, has made 74.8 percent of his field goals and has shot 119 free throws through 13 games.  Eric Jackson is good for 12.4 points per game and Jonah Bradley is good for 9.5 points per game along with Trey Bardsley and Trent Scheitel is good for 9.0 points and 4.6 rebounds.  Johnson also tops the team with 47 assists in 13 games played.  Johnson has led the Wolves in scoring in all but two games this season and has a season high of 30 points in a 78-76 loss to Northwestern.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 8-9 overall and 2-7 in the GPAC with wins this season in the league over Doane and Mount Marty.  Dordt started the season with a 6-2 but have dropped seven games since then with all seven losses coming at the hands of teams either in the top-25 in their respective divisions or are receiving votes in the polling.

Craig Stiemsma’s team is averaging 69.9 points per game and allows 72.5 points per outing and are giving up 39.6 rebounds per game while getting to 37.9 points per contest.  The Defenders convert 40.6 percent of their field goals and opponents make 38.9 percent of the field goals they take.  Dordt is making 31.6 percent of the three-point shots they take and have been forced into 314 turnovers through 17 games while opponents have committed 294.

Kayla Broekhuis is averaging 12.3 points per game through seven contests and is making 58 percent of her field goals and is also converting 58.1 percent of her three-point shots.  The Edgerton, Minnesota native averages 3.9 rebounds per game and is averaging over one steal per game.  Kara Van Dyke scores 11.8 points per game and she is taking down 7.6 rebounds per game and makes 42.1 percent of her field goals.  Jaimie Kok scores 11.0 points per game and takes down 5.8 rebounds per game.  Kok has played in two games since returning from a hand injury.  Danelle Boone has a team high 30 three-pointers made and Kime Kroeze and Jasmin Schelhaas each average 4.6 points per game.  Mycah Hulst and Abby Chapman score 4.4 and 4.3 points per game respectively and Hulst has a 4.6 rebounding average.  Elise Maresh, who hasn’t played since December 19, was averaging 16.2 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game.

The Dordt men are 16-2 with losses to Davenport and Morningside.  The Morningside loss snapped a 13 game winning streak by the Defenders and was the first of the GPAC season in nine starts.  After today the only conference team Dordt hasn’t played is Northwestern, whom it will be playing on Wednesday night at the De Witt Gym.

The Defenders are averaging 91.5 points per game and allow 77.1 points per outing with a shooting percentage of 49.9.  Opponents are making 44.4 percent of the field goals they attempt and Dordt has held a decided advantage at the free throw line where they have made 394 out of 544 attempts while foes have made 283 of 389 attempts.  The Defenders are outrebounding teams 43.2-29.6 and have committed 233 turnovers to 223 for opponents. 

Dordt is led by Kyle Lindbergh’s 17.4 points per game average and his 10.4 rebounds per game average.  Lindbergh also tops the team with 26 blocked shots and 20 steals and he is second on the team with a 2.5 assists per game average.  Dalton Franken scores 15.9 points per game average and his rebounding average is 4.6 and he is making 50 percent of his field goals.  Austin Katje is 40-88 on three-point shots this season and has a 13.9 scoring average to go with 4.2 rebounds per game.  Nathan Rindels is scoring 10.4 points while grabbing 5.1 rebounds and he is averaging 3.6 assists per game.  Tyler Wolterstorff’s scoring average is 11.1 points per game and he has taken the second most free throws of the team with 97 attempts and his rebounding average is 4.0.  David Den Herder scores 6.8 points per game and his rebounding average is 4.4 while Alex Terpstra is at 6.1 points per game.

LAST TIME… Wesleyan lost to Hastings 88-61 in women’s play on Wednesday night as Hastings led 43-23 at halftime.  Wesleyan committed 26 turnovers and was led by Courtney Cook with 26 points with ten rebounds.  Bridget Bucher, Amanda Diaz and Felicia TeKolste all had ten points as the Prairie Wolves were limited to 47 field goal attempts and were outrebounded 51-37.

Dordt lost an 89-61 decision to Morningside on Wednesday night.  The Mustangs were up 42-33 at halftime and erupted for 21 points in the first five minutes of the second half to establish a lead that was never seriously challenged in the second half.  Broekhuis had 17 and Boone 11 in the loss. 

The Prairie Wolves lost a 96-93 decision in overtime to Hastings in men’s play.  The score was 79-79 at the end of regulation.  Hastings converted 30-38 free throws to help secure the win and the Broncos had a 33-29 rebounding edge.  Wesleyan converted 55.4 percent of the field goals it attempted and was 12-25 on three-point attempts.  Hastings was 15-20 from the free throw line in overtime.  Jackson had 20 points and Johnson added 17.  Schweitzer and Bardsley had 15 and 14 points respectively and Trent Scheitel came off the bench to score 15 and grab six rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

A late comeback came up just short in the men’s contest between Dordt and Morningside with the Mustangs scoring a 100-96 win.  Dordt was paced by Katje with 24 points and eight rebounds and Lindbergh added 22 points with six rebounds with two assist and four steals.  Franken and Rindels had 16 and 14 respectively and each had seven rebounds with Rindels giving out three assists and two steals.

HISTORY… The Defender women lead the series 13-7 and won both games last season.  Dordt won the December 8 game 67-34 after leading 34-12 at halftime.  Broekhuis had 17 and Maresh12.  Courtney Cook topped Wesleyan with nine points and three rebounds.  January 19 the Defenders hosted Wesleyan and won an 80-63 decision after leading 37-32 at halftime.  Schelhaas and Van Dyke each had 14 points to lead the Defenders and Broekhuis knocked down 12 with Kok.  Mallory Shanahan led all players with 26 points and Janata had 16 as well for Wesleyan.  Wesleyan’s last win in the women’s series was a 63-60 decision on December 10, 2011 in Sioux Center.

The Wesleyan men lead the series 15-9 and the two teams split their meetings last season.  Wesleyan won in overtime in Lincoln 71-69 after the score was tied 61-61 at the end of regulation.  Austin Katje led Dordt with 16 points and had four rebounds.  Tyler Wolterstorff and Jordan Vogel added 11 each.  Chris Sievers and Cliff Warner both had ten in the loss.  Eric Jackson scored 19 and Trevor Johnson had 17 in Wesleyan’s win.  January 19 the Defenders were able to extend a 46-40 halftime lead into a 97-68 win behind 18 points by Cliff Warner and 17 by Sievers.  Trevor Wolterstorff added 16 and Vogel had ten.  Trent Scheitel and Eric Jackson each had 13 and Trevor Johnson and Trey Bardsley had 11 points.

NEXT… Dordt will host Northwestern on Wednesday, January 15 while Nebraska Wesleyan travels to Doane on Wednesday night.

RANKINGS…. The Dordt College men are no. 5 in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll released on Tuesday, January 7.  GPAC members Midland and Hastings are no. 8 and no. 17 respectively. 

Six GPAC teams are ranked in the top-25 and another is receiving votes in the poll.  Northwestern is no. 2; Concordia no. 7; Morningside no. 9; Hastings no.10; Briar Cliff no. 23 and Dakota Wesleyan is receiving votes.
