Dordt Basketball Travels To Doane Saturday

GAMETIME… Dordt will travel to Crete, Nebraska to face Doane College on Saturday, January 18 with the women’s game starting at 2:00 and the men at 4:00. SCOUTING REPORT… The Doane women are 2-8 in the GPAC and 8-10 overall. Wins for the Tigers in GPAC play are over Nebraska Wesleyan (82-30) and Mount Marty (75-70).
The Tigers are averaging 76.7 points per game and they allow an average of 69.2 points per contest. Doane is making 43.4 percent of its field goal attempts and allow opponents to convert 40.6 percent from the field. Doane is outrebounding teams 43.7-34.8 and the Tigers have committed 326 turnovers through 18 games while forcing 305.
Doane is led by Hannah Dostal’s 16.3 points per game average and she averages 8.4 rebounds per game while converting 52.5 percent of her field goal tries. Shelbi Bittinger scores 14.2 points per game and takes in 6.4 rebounds and she is converting 34.4 percent of her three-point tries. Heather Broman and Hanah Barnard average 13.3 and 10.2 points per game respectively and Broman averages 5.6 rebounds per game. Bittinger tops the team with 53 steals and Cali Bellar is good for 67 assists while starting all 18 games. Bellar averages 7.8 points per game and she converts 37.7 percent of her three-point field goals.
The Doane men are 9-10 this season and 2-8 in conference play with wins over Northwestern (84-78) and Mount Marty (78-49). The Tigers are 2-2 in their last four games with wins over Kansas Wesleyan and Grace and losses to Morningside (89-84) and Nebraska Wesleyan (94-86). Doane’s last five losses have all been by eight points or less.
The Tigers are averaging 84.8 points per game and allow 78.6 points per outing. The Tigers hold a 33.3-28.3 rebounding edge and they convert 50.8 percent of the field goals they take while opponents are making 50.3 percent of their shots. Doane is 351-459 from the free throw line for 76.5 percent success and opponents are 343-483 for 71 percent. Doane has committed 245 turnovers in 19 games and have forced 242 turnovers.
Nick Reed tops the team with a 22.9 points per game average and he leads the GPAC in scoring while converting 52.9 percent of his field goals. Domonique Smith is scoring 19.5 points per game and he makes 50.6 percent of his field goals. Reed and Smith get 7.1 and 4.5 rebounds per game respectively. Deonte Holt is the only other player in double figures in scoring with a 12.8 points per game average. Reed tops the team in assist with 63 and steals with 30. Smith has a season high of 35 points in a win over Bethel and Reed has a season high of 31 points in the win over Northwestern. Holt has also scored of 30 points this season in a loss to Briar Cliff.
DEFENDER NOTES… The Dordt women are 9-10 overall and 3-8 in the GPAC with wins over Doane (80-55), Mount Marty (68-59) and Nebraska Wesleyan (115-66). Dordt is 3-4 in its last seven games.
The Defenders average 71.8 points per game and allow 72.3 points per outing. Dordt is getting outrebounded 39-38.2 and the Defenders make 41.6 percent of the field goals they try with opponents converting for 39.1 percent success. Dordt has committed 350 turnovers in 19 games and has forced 325.
Kara Van Dyke leads the active Dordt players with a 12.9 points per game average and Kayla Broekhuis has scored 11.9 points per game in nine games this season. Broekhuis is converting 51.4 percent of her field goal tries and 53.5 percent of her three-point tries. Jaimie Kok is averaging 10.5 points per game and has played in 14 games, missing five earlier this year with an injury to her hand. Kara Van Dyke tops the team with 7.4 rebounds per game and she has a team high 24 steals and she has blocked 12 shots. Danelle Boone is scoring 8.2 points per game and leads the team with 35 made three-point baskets. Jasmin Schelhaas scores 5.7 points per game and she leads the team with 36 assists in 15 games played.
The Defender men are 18-2 overall and 10-1 in the conference with a loss to Morningside (100-96). Dordt has won two games in a row since that loss and also have a 13 game winning streak to its credit from earlier this season.
Kyle Lindbergh leads the team with a 17.0 points per game average and he also tops the team and the league in rebounding with a 10.7 average. Lindbergh has 52 assists this season with 30 blocked shots and 22 steals. Dalton Franken scores 15.8 points per game for the Defenders and he is taking down 4.6 rebounds per outing. Austin Katje’s scoring average is 13.6 points per game and he has a 4.5 per game rebounding average. Nathan Rindels is scoring 10.7 points per game and has a 5.1 rebounding average and he tops the team with 68 assists and he has 15 steals to his credit. Tyler Wolterstorff adds 10.5 points per outing and while David Den Herder and Alex Terpstra score 6.5 and 6.1 points per game in reserve roles.
Dordt is scoring 89.6 points per game and allow 75.4 points for its foes. The Defenders convert 49.4 percent of the field goals they take and opponents are converting 43.9 percent. Dordt has converted 414-576 free throws for 71.9 percent success and teams have made 303-422 free throws against them. Dordt owns a 43-30.1 rebounding advantage.
LAST TIME… The Doane women were 82-30 winners over Nebraska Wesleyan in Crete on Wednesday night. The Tigers held a 41-13 halftime edge and were led by Heather Broman’s 20 points and Bittinger added 19.
Dordt played Northwestern on Wednesday night and lost to the top-rated team in the country 76-62 after leading 36-35 at halftime. Kara Van Dyke led the Defenders with 19 and Danelle Boone hit for 16. Dordt had a 41-40 rebounding advantage and Kayla Broekhuis scored ten.
The Doane men lost to Nebraska Wesleyan 94-86 after trailing 49-31 at halftime. Domonique Smith and Nick Reed had 29 and 27 respectively and Reed had 15 rebounds. Smith and Reed had 21 and 25 shots respectively and Reed was 9-12 at the free throw line.
The Dordt men were 78-64 winners over Northwestern on Wednesday night after leading 39-25 at halftime. Dordt led by as many as 26 in the second half before Northwestern cut the gap in the final five minutes. Lindbergh scored 17 and had 13 rebounds with three assists and three blocked shots and a steal. Franken scored 16 and Rindels had 14 before fouling out. Katje and Terpstra each had 12 points.
HISTORY… The Doane women lead the series 10-9 with Dordt taking the November 23 meeting this season 80-55. Dordt converted 50 percent of its field goal attempts and had ten made three-point baskets. Dordt led 43-28 at halftime. Jaimie Kok scored 15 and Elise Maresh 14 in the win while Doane was topped by Morgan Hill’s 13 points and Shelbi Bittinger added 11. Doane had a 42-36 rebounding edge behind Hanah Barnard’s game high ten rebounds.
The Dordt men hold a 13-6 advantage in the series and the Defenders won the first meeting this season 85-71 at the De Witt Gym. Dordt was topped by Dalton Franken’s 18 points and seven rebounds. Austin Katje added 17 and had seven rebounds with Nathan Rindels scoring 11 while handing out a game high seven assists and he had seven rebounds. Tyler Wolterstorff and Kyle Lindbergh had 12 and 11 points respectively. Doane was led by Deonte Holt with 18 points and Nick Reed added 15. Domonique Smith added 13 to complete the double digit scorers. Doane converted 22-52 field goals in the loss while Dordt made 32-61 field goals. The Defenders also held a 45-27 rebounding edge.
NEXT… Dordt will host Mount Marty on Wednesday night in GPAC play while Doane is scheduled to host Midland in its next outing.
RANKINGS…. The Dordt College men held on to the no. 5 spot in the poll national poll released Tuesday, January 14. Midland is no. 9 while Hastings is no. 15. Morningside and Briar Cliff are both in the receiving votes portion of the schedule. The poll was very volatile with all but four teams shuffling spots.
Northwestern is tied for the no. 1 spots in the women’s poll. The Red Raiders are tied with Saint Francis (Illinois). Concordia held at no. 7 while Morningside and Hastings both held at no. 9 and no. 10. Briar Cliff and Dakota Wesleyan are both receiving votes.
