(Tuesday, January 21; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Great Plains Athletic Conference has released its preseason baseball coaches’ poll for the 2014 season.
Dordt College is 11th in the poll conducted annually by the GPAC baseball coaches.
The Defenders posted a 7-24 overall record in 2013 and a 5-15 conference mark. The Defenders return 20 players from a team that lost 13 league games by one or two runs in 2013.
Nathan Fraley (Senior; Boca Raton, Florida) returns after earning all-GPAC second-team honors with a .292 batting average to go with two homeruns and ten runs batted in. Jon Holwerda (Senior; Pella, Iowa) and Ben Van Kekerix (Senior; Sheldon, Iowa) both earned honorable mention honors from the GPAC coaches in post-season voting. Holwerda batted .314 for the Defenders while Van Kekerix posted a 3-4 record on the mound with a 4.72 earned run average with 35 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched.
The Defenders open the 2014 season at Manhattan Christian in Manhattan, Kansas with a pair of doubleheaders on February 21 and 22.
The GPAC baseball season will consist of 20 games (10 doubleheaders) and concludes with a postseason tournament May 1-3 in Mitchell, South Dakota at Cadwell Park and Drake Field.
GPAC baseball doubleheaders will consist of one seven inning and one nine inning game. The seven inning game will be played first in the doubleheader. If the first game goes extra innings, the second game will automatically become a seven inning contest. Conference games were previously seven innings long.
Points in the GPAC poll were assigned on a 10-1 bases and coaches may not vote for their own team.
