Baseball Opens Season Friday At Manhattan

GAMETIME… Dordt will travel to Manhattan, Kansas to play in a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, February 21 and 22. The Friday doubleheader gets started at 3:00 and the Saturday games will start at noon. SCOUTING REPORT… Manhattan Christian enters the doubleheaders with a 1-1 record, splitting with Nebraska Wesleyan on February 19.
Manhattan Christian got three hits in the doubleheader from Adam Schmitz and he scored three runs. Manhattan Christian pitched by committee in the first game, a 7-5, ten inning loss where Wesleyan came from 2-0 down in the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 advantage. Manhattan Christian forced extra innings with three runs in the home half of the ninth. Ben Rankin went the distance in game two and got the shutout in a 3-0 decision with five strikeouts and two bases on balls.
DEFENDER NOTES… This will be the first outing of the season for the Defenders after a 7-24 mark last season and a 5-15 GPAC record. The Defenders lost 13 games in conference play by one or two runs.
Jon Holwerda returns after posting a .314 batting average with nine runs batted in. Nathan Fraley also batted .292 last season while earning All-GPAC honors and he had six doubles with two homeruns and 14 stolen bases. Bryan Wallman batted .264 in his freshman campaign and Jason Wapnick returns after batting .258 in 23 games played.
Dordt’s pitching staff returns Ben Van Kekerix with a 3-4 record last season and four complete games with a 4.73 earned run average and 35 strikeouts in 40 innings of work. Lucas Carls was 1-1 in seven appearances and pitched 37 1/3 innings with 22 strikeouts and a 5.30 earned run average.
Dordt’s 29 man roster is made up of eight seniors, nine juniors, three sophomores and nine freshman. The newcomers include Nate Forseth who pitched for Northwest Nazarene University (Idaho) in 2012 and 2013. He had 13 appearances in 2012 and 14 appearances in 2013 and recorded sub-1.65 earned run averages in both seasons while appearing as a reliever.
THE SERIES…The two teams played two years ago and Dordt took three out of four contests.
