Relay, Koerner and De Vries Qualify

(Monday, February 24; Sioux Center, Iowa)  After near misses, the Dordt College Defenders added a relay team and two individuals to its list of NAIA National Track and Field Championship qualifiers.

The men’s 4 x 800 relay team of Sam Wensink (Freshman; Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin), Stephan McNamara (Sophomore; Chatham, Ontario), Nick Vander Kooi (Freshman; Fremont, Michigan) and Tim Bierma (Senior; Sioux Center, Iowa) ran to a fourth place finish at the GPAC Championships in a time of 7:56.94 which was just under the needed 7:56.96 to qualify for the National Meet in Geneva, Ohio in March.

Lillie Koerner (Junior; Freeman, South Dakota) also earned a berth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.59 which was under the required 2:19.  Koerner placed fourth in the event at the GPAC Championships.

Abby De Vries (Junior; Sioux Center, Iowa) was the runner-up in the mile with a time of 5:11.56 at the meet run in Crete, Nebraska.  De Vries’s time was just under the needed 5:12 to meet the automatic standard.

Dordt will send its national qualifiers to Geneva, Ohio for the NAIA National Championships Thursday, March 6 through Saturday, March 8.
