Morningside-Dordt Part III

SCOUTING REPORT… The Morningside men are 24-8 this season and they finished the GPAC season with a 16-4 mark during the 20 game trial that is the Great Plains Athletic Conference season.  The Mustangs have won nine games in a row dating back to an 86-76 loss to Nebraska Wesleyan on February 1.  The Mustangs dealt with injuries early in the season and got out to a 3-4 start after seven games and Jim Sykes’s team was 9-6 at the end of 2013.  Morningside started 2014 with four straight wins before losing to Hastings.  The only other loss in 2014 is the loss to Nebraska Wesleyan.   The Mustangs finished the year with a 13-2 record at home and an 11-6 record away from Allee Gym.  Morningside is 1-0 in games that have gone to overtime.

The Mustangs are averaging 86.9 points per game on offense with a 78.3 points per game defensive average.  The Mustangs make 49.3 percent of their field goals and 41.4 percent of their three-point baskets.  Teams are converting 45.6 percent of their field goals  against Morningside and Morningside holds a 36.4-32.2 rebounding advantage.  Morningside has converted 627-818 free throws for 76.7 percent success and opponents are 509-699 for 72.8 percent.

Danny Rudeen scores 20.8 points per game with 4.9 rebounds and he has 103 assists and 24 steals.  Kyle Nikkel scores 12.8 points per game and grabs 6.0 rebounds and he has made 61.5 percent of his field goal attempts.  Steve O’Neill drops in 12.1 points per game and leads the team with 138 assists and Tanner Miller is scoring 10.1 points per game.  Rudeen is making 48.5 percent of his three-point shots and 90.7 percent of his free throws.  Andrew Christen comes off the bench for 7.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.    Rudeen has led the Mustangs in scoring in 22 of 32 games and has a season high 36 points scored against Dakota Wesleyan in the semifinal round of the GPAC Tournament.  Rudeen is also closing in on 2,000 career points scored and has made over 42 percent of his three-point attempts during his career.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defenders are 28-4 this season and made it through the GPAC schedule with a 17-3 mark which was good for the regular season title.  The Defenders started the season with a 16-1 record before Morningside stopped a 13 game winning streak on January 8.  Since February 1 the Defenders are 6-2 and have won 13 out of 15 games at the De Witt Gym.  Dordt is 2-0 in games that have gone to overtime.

Dordt is averaging 89.9 points per game while allowing 77.8 points per game.  Dordt’s shooting percentage is 48.6 overall and 37.9 percent from the three-point line.  Opponents convert 44.5 percent of their field goals and Dordt has made 723-997 free throws this season for 72.5 percent and opponents have made 500-677 for 73.9 percent.  Dordt holds a 41.8-32.2 rebounding advantage.

The Defenders are led by Kyle Lindbergh’s 16.8 points per game average and 10.8 rebounds per game total.  Lindbergh converts 51.5 percent of his field goals and has 93 assists, 48 blocks and 37 steals.  Dalton Franken’s average is 15.5 points per game and he latches on to 4.4 rebounds per outing.  Austin Katje’s scoring average is 14.3 points per game and he gets to 4.3 rebounds and has made 44.7 percent of his three-point bucket attempts.  Nathan Rindels scores 12.6 points per game and converts 48.4 percent of his field goals and has a team high 110 assists with 28 steals.  Tyler Wolterstorff has lifted his scoring average to 12.0 points per game and he has a 4.2 rebounding average.  David Den Herder comes off the bench for 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds and he is making 62.3 percent of his field goals.  Alex Terpstra and Bryan Sumner score 5.0 and 4.8 points per game with Sumner converting 46.1 percent of his three-point tries.  Both Lindbergh and Katje have scored over one thousand career points and Katje is the career leader in three-pointers made with 253.  Lindbergh has over 900 career rebounds and ranks second all-time at Dordt College in that category.  Six different players have led the Defenders in scoring in individual games this season and five different players have led the Defenders in scoring in each of the last five games.

TOURNAMENT TRAIL…Morningside got a 108-106 win over Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Sioux City after trailing much of the game.  Morningside got a tip in off an inbounds play with less than a second remaining under the basket to win the game and stave off overtime.  Morningside was 38-76 from the field and 19-21 from the free throw line.  Morningside held a 39-30 rebounding advantage and both teams committed just nine turnovers.  Danny Rudeen scored 36 on 12-20 shooting and he had four rebounds and three assists in 43 minutes played.  Ryan Tegtmeier scored 21 while Steve O’Neill, Tanner Miller and Kyle Nikkel all had 11 points.  Andrew Christen had the game winner and ended with seven points.

In the quarterfinal round the Mustangs beat their cross town foe, the Briar Cliff Chargers 87-84. The Mustangs were up 42-41 at halftime and used a 24-27 night from the free throw line to secure the win, making 19-21 in the second half.  Morningside got 24 points by Danny Rudeen and 17 from Kyle Nikkel with eight rebounds.

Dordt turned Hastings away 83-67 on Saturday to earn the spot in the finals.  Dordt led 43-25 at halftime and led by as many as 29 in the second half.  Dordt was led by Nathan Rindels with 21 points and six rebounds while Tyler Wolterstorff had 17 points and six rebounds.  Kyle Lindbergh added 16 points and seven rebounds with two assists.  The Defenders were 25-54 from the field and 27-31 from the free throw line while holding a 36-28 rebounding edge.

The Defenders got to the semifinal round of the tournament after a 105-100 overtime win over Northwestern in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.  Dordt got 25 points by Dalton Franken and he had ten rebounds.  Kyle Lindbergh worked for 22 points and 15 rebounds and Nathan Rindels tossed in 23 with five assists in 41 minutes of play.

HISTORY… Morningside leads the men’s series 18-14 after sweeping the two regular season meetings with Dordt this year. 

Morningside won the most recent meeting by a 103-100 margin in Sioux Center on February 12.  Dordt trailed 55-48 at halftime but gave up a late lead in falling 103-100.  Danny Rudeen led the Morningside effort with 28 points and Andrew Christen had 18 in 19 minutes of action off the Mustang bench.  Nathan Rindels led the Defenders with 26 points and six rebounds and Dalton Franken scored 21 and Austin Katje had 18. 

Tthe Mustangs snapped a three game losing skid in the series on January 8 at Allee Gym as they held on for a 100-96 win.  Dordt fell behind by double figures but closed to within two in the closing moments before Morningside sealed the win with a lay-in at the buzzer.  Danny Rudeen led the Mustangs with 24 and Steve O’Neill added 17.  Austin Katje topped Dordt with 24 and Kyle Lindbergh had 22.  Nathan Rindels added 14 and Tyler Wolterstorff nine in the loss.

This game is a rematch of last year’s GPAC title game won by Dordt 75-63.  Dordt started fast with a 46-30 halftime lead and held on to win by 12.  The Defenders got 16 each from Trevor Wolterstorff and Jordan Vogel while Morningside got 17 from Danny Rudeen and 14 by Kyle Nikkel with seven rebounds. 

These two schools also met in the 2006 GPAC title game with Morningside prevailing 71-62.  Luke Ruter and Mark Rowenhorst each had 12 for the Defenders while Morningside was topped by Matt Johnson and Brad Schmit with 14 each.  Both teams advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament that year.

GPAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY….This is the 14th GPAC Post-Season Basketball Tournament.  This will be Dordt’s sixth appearance in the title game and its fourth in a row.

COACHES’ POLL…The Defender men are no. 6 in the poll released on February 25.  Midland held at no. 8 and Morningside improved to no. 15. Hastings is in the receiving votes category of the polling.  The women’s poll has four GPAC teams in the top-10 with Hastings no. 4; Morningside no. 6; Concordia no. 7 and Northwestern is no. 9. Both Midland and Dakota Wesleyan were in the receiving votes category of the ranking.

The final coaches’ poll for both the women and the men will be released on Wednesday, March 5.  This poll will be used to determine the at-large berths and seeds for the national championship bracket.

NAIA DIVISION II NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP…Both of these teams, along with 30 others, will qualify for the NAIA Division II National Championship at the College of the Ozarks near Branson, Missouri.  The bracket opens play on Wednesday, March 12 with first round games on Wednesday and Thursday, second round play on Friday and quarterfinal round action on Saturday, March 15.  The semifinals will be played on Monday, March 17 and the championship is played out on Tuesday, March 18.

The tournament field will be announced on Wednesday, March 5 with the bracket for the tournament released late in the day on Wednesday.

Both of these two teams have qualified for four of the Division II Tournaments.  The Defenders qualified in 2006, 2012, 2013 and 2014.  Morningside qualified in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2014.  Dordt advanced to the quarterfinal round in both 2012 and 2013 and made a first round exit in 2006.  The Mustangs made the quarterfinal round in 2006 and were bounce from the tournament in the second round in 2008 and 2009.  Dordt also made an appearance in the single division 1988 tournament and qualified for the quarterfinal round before exiting the field in Kansas City.

GPAC TOURNAMENTS… The Dordt Defender men and Northwestern women secured NAIA National Tournament Berths with their regular season titles and no. 1 seeds in the post-season tournament.  Both the Morningside men and women have secured automatic spots in the 32 team fields with at least a runner-up finish in the post-season tournament.
