Dordt Softball Travels To Storm Lake Thursday

GAMETIME…Dordt College will travel Buena Vista in Storm Lake, Iowa  for a pair of games on Thursday, March 20.  The doubleheader begins at 5:00.

SCOUTING REPORT… Buena Vista is 1-5 this season with a win over Bethel (Minnesota) and losses to St. Thomas (twice), Bethel and Wisconsin River Falls (twice). 

The Beavers are batting .228 with Jordan Pilcher and Stephanie Hayden each garnering eight hits with a double each and batting averages of .421 and .400 respectively.  Sam Engleman is batting 3.12 and has three doubles,  a homerun and five runs batted in.

Jenna Falline is 1-2 on the mound with a 4.04 earned run average and she has pitched 26 innings with 13 strikeouts.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt College is 3-13 this season with wins over Arizona Christian, Valley City State and the College of Saint Mary.

The Defenders have a team batting average of .254 and have been outscored 109-50 and outhit 135-104.  Sidney Larson has a .313 batting average and has ten hits with two doubles.  Kassidy Van Voorst has 16 hits and bats .314 and Ashton Beaird’s batting average is up to  .340 with six doubles, three homeruns eight runs batted in. Erica White has 15 hits with five doubles, three homeruns and 13 runs batted in.  Van Voorst has 11 stolen bases and Erica White and Selena Rinehart each have five  The Defenders have stolen 34 bases in 38 attempts.

Sidney Larsen has pitched 48 2/3 innings and has 22 strikeouts and has given up 27 earned runs.  Haley Fligge and Samantha Dunn have worked 29 2/3 innings and 18 1/3 innings respectively.

LAST TIME…Buena Vista lost a pair to Wisconsin River Falls 9-8 and 9-1 on March 2 while the Defenders split with the College of Saint Mary Flames

The Dordt College softball team got a shutout pitching performance from Sidney Larsen and rolled to a 6-0 win over the College of Saint Mary Flames in game one of the doubleheader.

Dordt took the lead for good in the first inning when Ashton Beaird doubled in Kassidy Van Voorst. Van Voorst had led off the game with a double. The Flames threatened in the bottom of the first inning but stranded two runners.

Dordt added to their lead in the third when Erica White slugged her third homerun of the season, scoring Van Voorst after she had walked to reach base. Van Voorst did more damage in the fifth inning with a homerun.

The Defenders finished the scoring in the top of the seventh inning with Erica White and Beaird singling in runs to make the final 6-0.

Other than the first inning, the Flames stranded two runners in the fourth and single runners in three other innings.

Van Voorst scored four runs and was 2-3 with a double and homerun. White knocked in three runs and had a homerun and single. Beaird had a single and a double and two runs batted in. Dordt outhit the Flames 9-5.

Larsen went the distance with one strikeout, no walks and five hits allowed.

The Dordt College softball team lost a 7-5 decision to the College of Saint Mary Flames in game two of their doubleheader.

Dordt got two runs in the first inning when Ashton Beaird clubbed a homerun that scored Erica White. The Flames came back with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first on a grand slam by Jessica Gargano.

Beaird homered to lead off the fourth inning and Michal Hoogland followed with a homerun. Dordt got one more run on in the inning on an error to take the lead at 5-4.

Dordt missed a chance to build on the lead when they left two runners stranded in the sixth inning with the final two outs of the inning coming with two runners on. The Flames made the most of the sixth inning when they scored three runs on four hits, scoring two unearned runs on an error late in the inning that gave them a two run lead. Dordt threatened in the seventh with Bethany Dykstra singling and Erica White doubled with an out. Michal Hoogland walked with two outs to load the bases and a ground out finished the game.

Dordt was outhit 12-11 with Sidney Larsen taking the loss in relief. Samantha Dunn went five innings to start and was charged with four runs and one walk with eight hits and struck out three. Larsen was charged with three runs--one of them earned and struck out one.

Beaird was 2-4 with three runs batted on with her two homeruns. Sidney Larsen, Samantha Dunn, Michal Hoogland and Erica White all had two hits.

THE SERIES…Dordt and Buena Vista have split their four meetings right down the middle.  Buena Vista won game one on March 22, 2012 with Ashton Beaird going 3-3 at the plate with a solo homerun for the Defenders and Buena Vista got a 2-3 performance from Stephanie Hayden.  Kacy Oberfoell took the loss while striking out six and walking five with four hits allowed. 

Sidney Larsen got the pitching win in game two by a 4-0 count as she scattered five hits and Dordt scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to get the win.

NEXT…The College of Saint Mary will host Northwestern on March 20 and Presentation on Saturday, March 22.

Dordt College will travel to Buena Vista in Storm Lake, Iowa on Thursday, March 20.  The Defenders’ games with Dakota State on Saturday, March 22 have been postponed to Friday, March 28.  Dordt is scheduled to travel to Morningside on Tuesday, March 25.
