Dordt Softball At Morningside Wednesday

GAMETIME…The Dordt College Defender softball team will travel to Morningside in Sioux City, Iowa for a conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 26.  The games will start at 5:00 and were originally conditions.

SCOUTING REPORT… Morningside is 6-6 this season and has won two of its last three games, prevailing over Oklahoma Wesleyan and Culver Stockton.  This will be the conference opener for both Morningside and Dordt. 

The Mustangs are batting .278 as a team with a 3.70 earned run average and they have been outscored 50-48 this season.

Taylor Daas bats .447 with  a team leading 17 hits, three homeruns, nine runs scored and nine runs batted in.  Michelle Brockamp is batting .361 with 13 hits, four doubles and eight runs batted in.  Kati Steffen has a .333 batting average. 

Kayla Salonen is 3-3 on the mound with a 2.88 earned run average and she has pitched 34 innings with 21 strikeouts and has walked 14 batters.  Jordan Johnson is 3-3 with a 4.78 earned run average and has pitched 33 2/3 innings  with 24 strikeouts and 25 walks. 

DEFENDER NOTES… The Dordt Defenders are 4-14 this season with wins over Arizona Christian, Valley City State, the College of Saint Mary and Buena Vista.  The Defenders are 2-2 in their last four outings.

The Defenders bat .270 as a team and have a team earned run average of 5.65 this season.  Dordt has been outscored 119-63 this season and is led by Ashton Beaird’s .362 batting average and she has a tea high six homeruns with 13 runs batted in and she also has six doubles and 11 runs scored with a team high 21 hits.  Sidney Larsen is batting .359 this season with three doubles and 14 hits while Kassidy Van Voorst is batting .356 with 21 hits and five doubles with a team high 13 runs scored.  Van Voorst has stolen 14 bases in 14 attempts this season and Erica White has 20 hits with ten runs scored and a team high 18 runs batted in and has clubbed four homeruns.

Sidney Larsen is 3-7 on the mound with a 4.53 earned run average and has struck out 28 batters in 55 2/3 innings.  Samantha Dunn is 1-1 in 18 1/3 innings and she has struck out 12 batters with one walk issued.  Haley Fligge has pitched 36 innings and has 27 strikeouts.

LAST TIME…Morningside last played on March 15 and they beat Culver Stockton 8-0 and lost to Evangel 4-3. 

Kati Steffen and Jordan Johnson each had three hits in the win over Culver Stockton and Johnson pitched Morningside to the win as she scattered four hits in the five inning contest.  Steffen knocked in three runs with a homerun and two singles.

Morningside and Evangel traded runs in the seventh inning with Evangel prevailing with the winning run coming across with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.  Steffen had two hits and a run scored in the loss.  Kayla Salonen started the game and went three innings and allowed three hits with a strikeout.  Jordan Johnson came on in relief and took the loss while allowing the winning run and she struck out three in three and two-third innings.

Dordt split with Buena Vista on March 20, winning game one of the twinbill on 7-3 with Ashton Bearid banging out two homeruns and she had four runs batted in while Kassidy Van Voorst, Erica White and Samantha Dunn each getting two hits and Sidney Larsen had three hits while also pitching Dordt to the win with four hits allowed with five walks and six strikeouts. 

The Defenders had the lead in game two but couldn’t hold it as Buena Vista got three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 7-6.  Dordt outhit Buena Vista 11-8 and Ashton Beaird had her fifth homerun in three games and Erica White also had a homer for the Defenders.  White knocked in three hits and Kassidy Van Voorst had three singles with two runs scored.  Haley Fligge absorbed the loss while giving up eight hits with six walks and nine strikeouts.

THE SERIES…Dordt is 12-37 against Morningside and the Mustangs swept the doubleheader last year.  Dordt lost 5-3 in game one with Beaird and Larson both recording two hits.  Morningside had two runs in the first and third innings and out hit the Defenders 11-9. 

The Mustangs earned the sweep as they scored on an avalanche of runs in the first inning of game two, giving up 12 runs on the way to a 22-4 loss.  Emma Remy was the winning pitcher as she limited Dordt to five hits.

NEXT…Dordt is scheduled to host Dakota State on Friday, March 26 at 4:00 and will travel to Hastings on Saturday, March 27 at 1:00. 

Morningside will be in action next on March 29 when they host Dickinson State.
