Dordt Hosts Concordia Saturday

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host Concordia on Saturday, January 5.  The women’s game will get underway at 2:00 with the men’s game to follow at 4:00.  There will be a live webcast available at www.dordt.edu/athletics.  The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu.  Results will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics  and at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Concordia women are ranked no. 1 in the country and stand 8-0 in the GPAC and 15-0 overall.  The Bulldogs finished the 2011-2012 season at the NAIA Divison II National Tournament where they advanced to the semifinal round before being eliminated.

The Bulldogs are averaging 85.9 points per game and allow 59.2 points per game.  Drew Olson’s team has been involved in four games decided by single digits with their closest calls coming in wins over Morningside 80-76 and Northwestern 71-68.  Concordia has scored  over 90 points in seven games but haven’t broken that barrier since November 27.  Concordia is making 42.8 percent of the field goals it takes and converts 35.9 percent of the three-point shots taken.  Concordia outrebounds teams 43.1-39.1 and has forced 29.4 turnovers per game and commits 17.6 turnovers of its own.

Kristen Conahan leads the team with 15.6 points per game and she leads the team with 39 made three-pointers.  Bailey Morris comes off the bench and has a 14.7 points per game average and has converted 22 three-point shots and she averages just over three assists per game while Conahan has dished out 3.5 assists per game.  Katie Rich completes the double digit scorers with 11.3 points per game and she is making 45 percent of her field goals.  Five other players are averaging between 6.8 and 9.0 points per game.  Lori Loboda and Jericca Pearson lead the teams in rebounding with 6.8 and 5.3 per game respectively.  Both Morris and Conahan average over three steals per outing.

The Concordia men are 5-9 overall and 2-6 in the GPAC.  Concordia started the season 5-1 but have lost eight games in a row.  The Bulldogs had three point wins over Mount Marty and Nebraska Wesleyan to start the conference season  and have lost in overtime to Midland with other losses to Morningside, Briar Cliff, Dakota Wesleyan, Doane and Northwestern.

Concordia is surrendering 78.1 points per game and allow 73.6 points per outing.  Opponents are making 45.9 percent of the field goals they attempt while the Bulldogs have made 43.5 percent of their field goals.  Teams are outrebounding Concordia by a slight 35.3-35.0 margin and turnovers are about even with Concordia turning it over a total of 196 times and opponents have 193 turnovers. 

Porter Birtell has a 15.1 points per game average and is converting 63.8 percent of his field goals and he takes down 6.0 rebounds.  Beau Smith is good for 13.1 points per game and 6.0 rebounds.  Adam Vogt and Joel Haywood score 10.8 and 10.2 points per game respectively and Haywood takes down 4.5 rebounds while Charles Dunbar dishes out four assists per game to go with 7.9 points per game.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Dordt women are 9-9 this season and 4-5 in the GPAC.  Dordt hasn’t had many substantial winning or losing streaks.  The Defenders lost three games in a row to start the season and have won two games in a row on three different occasions this season.  The Defenders are 4-2 in their last six games.  Dordt has allowed 70 or more points in six games this season and are 1-5 in those games.  Dordt has allowed less than 60 points in eight games and is 7-1 on those contests.

The Defenders convert for 68.4 points per game and allow 58.4 points per game.  Dordt is making 40.1 percent of the field goals it takes and opponents are averaging making 36.8 percent of its field goals.  The Defenders have made 111-327 three-point shots taken and have made 281-430 free throws while opponents have made 223-354.  Dordt holds a 38.2-36.7 rebounding advantage and has committed 336 turnovers for an 18.7 average while forcing 21.6. 

Kara Van Dyke is the leading scorer with a 13.1 average and she has converted 49.4 percent of her field goals and takes down a team high 7.5 rebounds.  Kayla Broekhuis scores 11.2 points per game and has made a team high 29 three-point shots.  Brianna Spronk dumps in 10.8 points per game and takes down 5.4 rebounds while dishing out 2.1 assists and 1.7 steals per outing.  Elise Maresh scores 9.9 points per game and she takes down 5.6 rebounds.  Danelle Boone and Jasmin Schelhaas average 7.1 and 7.0 points per game respectively.  Both have 26 made three-point shots this season.

Dordt is 14-3 overall and 6-3 in the GPAC and have won five games in a row dating back to a December 12 win over Morningside.  Four of the wins for Dordt during that run have come on the road.  The Defenders have allowed less than 70 points in nine games and are unbeaten in those contests.  The Defenders have allowed over 80 points twice and are 0-2 in those games.

Dordt averages 80.3 points per game and allow 66.8 points per contest while converting 50.1 percent of the field goals they take.  Opponents make 40.8 percent of the field goals they’ve attempted and Dordt is 266-404 on free throws while opponents are 184-268.  The Defenders hold a 40.2-30.8 rebounding advantage but have turned the ball over 14.8 times per outing while forcing 12.8 per game.

Cliff Warner is averaging 15.5 points per game with nearly four assists and he is converting 46.7 percent of his three-point shots  while converting 63-135.  Warner is also making 81.8 percent of his free throws (45-55).  Trevor Wolterstorff adds13.8 points per game with 6.5 rebounds and he is making 58 percent of his field goals.  Jordan Vogel makes 63.8 percent of his field goals and is averaging 11.8 points per game with 5.1 rebounds.  Austin Katje adds 9.9 points per game and is 28-67 this season on his three-point attempts and Chris Sievers has lifted his scoring average to 9.3 points per game.  Kyle Lindbergh is good for 7.4 points per game and 6.1 rebounds.

NEXT… Concordia will host Hastings on Wednesday while the Defenders travel to Madison, South Dakota to face Dakota State on Wednesday, January 9.

LAST TIME… The Dordt women lost a 73-65 decision to Hastings on Wednesday after getting outrebounded 38-23.  The Defenders were led in scoring by Elise Maresh with 19 points and seven rebounds.  Kayla Broekhuis added 12 and Kara Van Dyke chipped in with 11.  Dordt made 22-59 field goals and committed just nine turnovers in the loss.

The Concordia Bulldogs beat Northwestern on Wednesday 71-68 after trailing 35-34 at halftime.  Bailey Morris came off the bench to lead Concordia with 19 points on 7-25 shooting from the floor with seven rebounds.  Kristen Conahan had 17 points and three assists with three steals.  Concordia made 25-74 shots while forcing Northwestern into 25 turnovers.

The Defender men beat Hastings 91-79 after leading 41-40 at halftime.  The Defenders made 32-54 shots from the floor and had a 32-24 rebounding advantage while turning the ball over 11 times to ten times for the Broncos.  Chris Sievers and Cliff Warner both had 18 points and Trevor Wolterstorff added 17 with five rebounds and two steals.  Austin Katje knocked down 15 while Kyle Lindbergh and  Jordan Vogel both had eight with Lindbergh grabbing nine rebounds.

The Concordia men lost a 94-74 decision to Northwestern at home on Wednesday after trailing 52-28 at halftime.  Max Wegener had 13 points in a reserve role while Joel Haywood added 11 with Porter Birtell getting ten points.  Joey Werning had a team high five rebounds as Northwestern outrebounded the hosts 45-32.

SERIES… Concordia leads the women’s series 16-6 and swept the two meetings last season.  The January 7 game in Seward was a 65-54 win for the Bulldogs with Conahan scoring 16 and Rich had 13 in a reserve role.  Dordt got 10 points from Spronk and was forced into 27 turnovers but held their own on the boards while getting outrebounded by a 39-37 margin.

The Bulldogs ten made it a season sweep with a 78-57 win in Sioux Center on February 11 by a 71-64 margin.  Kayla Broekhuis scored 17 while Spronk and Jaimie Kok both had ten as Dordt led 33-25 at halftime.  Conahan had 19 and Rich and Amber Kistler both had 13. 

The Dordt men lead the series 16-6 and won all three meetings last season.  Dordt won an overtime decision in Seward on January 7 by an 87-83 margin, outscoring the Bulldogs 10-6 in the extra session.  Lindbergh had 22 points and five rebounds and Vogel scored 20 with ten rebounds.  Trevor Wolterstorff added 15 and Cliff Warner had 11 points and 13 assists.  Porter Birtell scored 23 and grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss and Barrett Braun scored 19.

February 11 the Defenders beat Concordia 85-68 after leading 43-33 at halftime.  Sievers scored 22 while making 9-13 field goals and Vogel added 16 as Dordt converted 30-59 field goals and 19-25 free throws.  Braun had 15 points and Birtell 12 in the loss.

Eleven days later Dordt hosted Concordia in the GPAC Quarterfinals and Dordt won a 78-57 decision after leading 44-22 at halftime.  Sievers and Vogel had 17 and 15 respectively while Charles Dunbar came off the bench to score 13 for Concordia.  The Bulldogs were limited to 32.8 percent shooting and Dordt made 51.6 percent of their field goals.
