Busy Stretch Ahead For Defender Softball

GAMETIME… Dordt will play in three doubleheaders on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 22, 23 and 24.  The Thursday twinbill is with Dakota State at 4:00 and the Friday games are with Dakota Wesleyan at 3:00.  Dordt travels to Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday to conclude the regular season with a 1:00 start in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Friday games with Dakota Wesleyan will be aired on KDCR 88.5 FM and online at www.dordt.edu/athletics.  Results of the games can be found at www.dordt.edu/athletics  and at  https://twitter.com/dcathletics at the conclusion of play.

SCOUTING REPORT… Dakota State is 12-14 this season and competes as an Independent without a conference affiliation.  Next season Dakota State will be a part of the recently formed Northern Star Conference with Mayville State, Jamestown, Valley City State and Presentation.  The following year Dickinson State will be in the mix.

The Lady T’s were swept by Avila on April 22 after taking four straight from Presentation on April 6 and 7.

Brittany Hill is batting .539 this season with two homeruns and 35 runs batted in and she has a team high 48 hits.  Audrey Lorenz is batting .487 with 38 hits and she has 19 runs batted in and nine stolen bases.  Samantha Deen is 3-3 with a 3.56 earned run average and has 32 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched.  Katie Slibowski is 7-6 with a 4.20 earned run average in 85 innings and 77 strikeouts.

Dakota Wesleyan is 6-18 this season with a 4-6 GPAC record.  The Tigers are on a four game losing skid with doubleheader losses to Nebraska Wesleyan and Morningside. 

Hailey Unger is batting .414 and has nine doubles with 15 runs batted in and has 24 hits.  Katie Anderus is batting .342 with five doubles and eight runs batted in and a team high 26 hits.  The Tigers are batting .268 as a team and have scored just under four runs per game.  Jill Dickson has a 3-10 record and has a 4.56 earned run average in 78 innings of work.  Tiffany Sharp  is 3-5 with a 7.55 earned run average and she has thrown 38 innings and has struck out 14.

Nebraska Wesleyan is 11-14 this season with a 6-8 GPAC record.  The Prairie Wolves have hit a tough stretch of games and have gone 1-6 in their last seven games.  The seven game stretch followed a four game winning streak.  The last three losses for Wesleyan have come by a total of four runs.

Becky Bomberger is batting .380 this season with 27 hits, two homeruns and 13 runs batted in.  Rachel Kubik bats .378 with 20 runs batted in and she has nine doubles and 28 hits.  Megan Cottier is 7-7 with 89 innings pitched and has a 3.37 earned run average and has struck out 36.  Marisa Garver is 3-7 with a 4.03 earned run average and she has 20 strikeouts.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 6-27 this season and 2-14 in GPAC play.  The Defenders are batting .202 as a team and average just over three runs per game on offense.

Ashton Beaird has a .284 batting average to go with six homeruns and 18 runs batted in and she has been walked 12 times and has a team high eight doubles.  Ashley Van Kooten has a .266 batting average and has three homeruns with 16 runs  batted in and Haley Huisman has clubbed four homeruns and along with Brittany Kooiker has 13 runs batted in.

Sidney Larsen is 5-14 this season with a 5.76 earned run average and she has pitched 136 innings with 64 strikeouts and she has 30 walks.

THE SERIES… Dordt leads the series with Dakota State 24-6 and swept the most recent meeting on April 23, 2009 5-4 and 9-8. Dordt leads the series with Dakota Wesleyan 36-9 and split the doubleheader last April 24 with a win in game one 4-0 and a loss of 3-1 in game two.  Nebraska Wesleyan swept Dordt last season to up their series lead to 17-12 after winning the games 3-2 and 9-4.

NEXT UP… The top-eight teams in the final standings of the Great Plains Athletic Conference will qualify for the GPAC Tournament which is scheduled for May 1-3.
