Dordt students earn high honors at NATS competition

Five Dordt College vocal students went on to the finalist round—the highest honor—of the Lewis and Clark Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition. The competition was held on Saturday, April 20, at Western Iowa Technical College in Sioux City, Iowa, and included teachers and students from Fort Dodge, Storm Lake, Sioux City, and Sioux Center.

Students participated in one or both categories: Art Song and Music Theatre. Dordt students who proceeded to finals in the Art Song category are freshman Marshall Fynaardt (New Sharon, Iowa) and junior Leanna Bentz (Platte, South Dakota). Those who proceeded to finals in both categories are junior Rachel Kooiman (Doon, Iowa), senior Maria Bouwkamp (Pella, Iowa), and senior Mia Kornelis (Sioux Center, Iowa).

Many Dordt College students went on to the semi-final round. “All students represented Dordt College very well and received many favorable comments from the judges,” said Pam De Haan, voice and saxophone instructor at Dordt College.

Other participants were: senior Tia Nieuwsma (Sioux Center, Iowa), junior Jon Hageman (Highlands Ranch, Colorado), senior Joanna Bevaart (Lacombe, Alberta), junior David Visser (Oskaloosa, Iowa), and freshman Christy Gallagher (Hornick, Iowa). Piano accompanists include: senior Craig Disselkoen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), sophomore Monica McConnell (Sioux Center, Iowa), freshman Rianne Van Wingerden (Newton, New Jersey), freshman Joni Van Den Top (Rock Rapids, Iowa), and freshman Nathan Walter (Norfolk, Nebraska).
