Dordt-Briar Cliff Football Saturday

THE FOE… Briar Cliff is 0-3 this season and 0-2 in GPAC play with losses in the league to Dakota Wesleyan (56-15) and Nebraska Wesleyan (31-7).  Briar Cliff’s non-conference loss was a 30-9 decision at Benedictine (Kansas).

The Briar Cliff offense has been outgained 784-324 on the ground and 813-651 in the air.  Alec Dutko and Kevin Van Egdom split the quarterbacking so far this season.  Dutko has thrown for 324 yards in two games played and is 22-51 passing with two touchdowns and three interceptions.  Van Egdom’s numbers are 25-54 for 315 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions.  Tyler McGhee is the top pass catcher with 12 grabs for 308 yards and two touchdowns including a long of 69 yards.  Brady Van Dusen has ten catches for 124 yards and Bret Van Muyden has nine catches for 106 yards. Mitch Heikes has gained 118 yards on 35 attempts and Kenny Thompson has 25 carries for 92 yards.

Four different players have interceptions this season with Steven Trujillo and Matt Miller leading the team with 20 tackles each.  Kenny Hanes has 19 tackles and Eric Nicholsen 18.  Rasheed Tynes has two sacks to his credit and the Briar Cliff defense has forced six turnovers by fumble.  Rusty Muncy has punted 22 times for a 40.0 average and Alex Pujado is 3-3 on point after attempts.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC with a win over Dakota State to start the season and losses in the GPAC to Midland and Morningside. 

The Defenders have outgained teams on the ground 641-635 through three games but have been outgained in the air 549-186.  Erin Francis has 21 carries for 125 yards and Lenard Manuel has 28 carries for 127 yards.  Courtney Samuel has 27 carries for 117 yards and Thomas Newman have 44 carries for 84 yards.  Trai Pickney and Daniel Fennig have 11 and 10 carries each for 81 and 72 yards.  Sam Verhulst has caught four passes for 105 yards while Fennig and Darryl Van Grouw have three catches each for 28 and 36 yards.  Verhulst has two touchdown catches and Van Grouw one.  Newman has taken over at quarterback with an injury to Bryce Rusler and is 5-15 passing for 64 yards in two games.

Seth Vande Voort has 32 tackles and Cole McClain has 24 stops along with Jake Atkinson.  Vande Voort and Micah Applegate lead the team with three tackles for loss and Sean Quinlan has a quarterback sack.  Heath Bonestroo has punted 17 times for a 39.5 average and Barry Dykstra is 5-6 on point after kicks.

PREVIOUSLY…The Briar Cliff Charges were on the short end of a 31-7 decision with Nebraska Wesleyan.  Wesleyan scored a touchdown in the first quarter and then tacked on another in the third quarter to go up 14-0.  Wesleyan scored on a field goal and two rushing touchdowns in the fourth to seal the win.  Briar Cliff’s score came in the fourth when Dutko completed a pass to McGhee.  The McGhee catch was one of four the Charger receiver made for a total of 62 yards.  Matt Harshman had three catches for 40 yards and Dutko was 15-34 passing for 170 yards with two interceptions.

Andre Reyes had ten tackles and Hanes nine.  Reyes forced  fumble as did Miller.  Wesleyan outgained Briar Cliff 436-252 and the Prairie Wolves ground out 28 first downs to 16 for the Chargers. 

Dordt lost to Morningside 79-14.  Both teams ran for 229 yards and Dordt scored on two extended drives.  One drive was a 13 play, 75 yard drive capped by a Fennig two yard run and the other was a 10 play, 79 drive finished by a Lenard Manuel one yard plunge.  Francis ran for 66 yards on seven carries and Fennig had five carries for 51 yards.  Manuel and Samuel each had 33 and 25 yards respectively. 

Jake Atkinson made 11 tackles with one for a loss and McClain had eight tackles.  Sean Quinlan and Seth Vande Voort both had six tackles and Ray Cleveland four.

HISTORY… Dordt and Briar Cliff have played five times with Briar Cliff winning all the contests.  Last year’s meeting had the Chargers winning in dramatic fashion as they converted a pass attempt with 00:10 left from PJ Quiroga to Bryce Harshman to score a 33-29 win.

Dordt ran for 229 yards in the loss while Briar Cliff had 130 yards on the ground.  Dordt threw for 167 yards and Briar Cliff 295.  Dordt’s ground attack was led by Trai Pickney’s 105 yards and two touchdowns while Daniel Fennig and Josh Van Kempen had 51 and 40 yards.  David Griess made three catches for 45 yards and Pickney had three grabs for 53 yards.  Harshman caught nine balls for Briar Cliff and Quiroga was 24-37 passing for 295 yards.  Briar Cliff’s Chase Colvin made 10 tackles while Dordt’s Seth Vande Voort had 16 and Vanoy Harris 12. 

The last three meetings between Dordt and Briar Cliff have been close with Briar Cliff prevailing in overtime 16-10 in 2011 and 17-7 in 2010.

AROUND THE CORNER… Next up for the Chargers is a road trip to Hastings on October 5.  Dordt returns home for a pair of games the next two weekends.  Dordt will host Concordia on October 5 and Trinity Bible College on Saturday, October 12.
