Dordt Basketball Hosts Briar Cliff

GAMETIME…The Dordt College Defender women’s and men’s basketball teams host Briar Cliff in Great Plains Athletic Conference women’s and men’s play on Wednesday, December 4. The women’s contest will start at 6:00 with the men to follow at about 8:00. SCOUTING REPORT… Briar Cliff is 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the GPAC with wins in the league over Doane, Nebraska Wesleyan and Dakota Wesleyan. The losses in GPAC play are to Northwestern and Concordia.
The Chargers average 88.4 points per game and allow 81.6 points per contest. Mike Power’s team is converting 42.9 percent of his field goals and allow opponents to make 40.1 percent of their field goals. The Chargers are getting outrebounded 44.1-44.8 and have forced 231 turnovers in nine games while giving it up 208 times.
Slone Masters has converted 16.0 points per game with 6.3 rebounds and she is making 50 percent of her field goals. Kaylee Blake scores 12.3 points per game in mostly a reserve role and she gets to 4.9 rebounds per game. Mattie Murren has played in and started six games and has a scoring average of 10.5 points per game but she did not play in the most recent game Briar Cliff played. Heather Haber and McKenzie Shipley each have 18 assists in nin games and Masters has 19.
The Briar Cliff men are 4-0 in the conference and 8-3 overall. The wins for Briar Cliff in league play are over Northwestern, Doane, Concordia and Dakota Wesleyan. The three losses are to Grand View, Clarke and Bellevue. The Bellevue loss snapped a six game winning streak and came on Saturday, November 30.
The Chargers score 89.5 points per game and allow 80.6 points per game while converting 51.0 percent of their field goal attempts and opponents are making 46.4 percent of their shots. Briar Cliff holds a 35.7-34.2 reboudning edge and have committed 149 turnovers while forcing 156.
Zach Otting tops the team with a 21.3 points per game average and 4.6 rebounds and he is making 52.8 percent of his field goals while getting to the free throw line 106 times already and he has converted 87 percent of his field goals. Clayton Harreld is scoring 16.5 points per game and Ricky Torres and Shane Graves each score 7.9 points per game with Graves handing out a team high 34 assists so far.
DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 6-2 this season and 2-1 in GPAC play. Dordt has won two games in a row since losing to Midland. Dordt’s wins in league play are over Doane and Mount Marty.
Dordt has outscored teams 73-63.6 and they hold a 38.9-36.5 rebounding advantage. The Defenders have converted 41.4 percent of their field goals and limit teams to 35.3 percent shooting. Dordt has turned the ball over 132 times to 155 times for opponents.
Elise Maresh leads the team with a 15.6 points per game average and she also takes down 4.5 rebounds per game. Maresh is making 53.9 percent of her field goals. Kara Van Dyke adds 12.8 points per game and takes in a team high 7.9 rebounds per game and Jaimie Kok’s scoring average is 11.4 points per game with 5.9 rebounds. Danelle Boone has an 8.3 points per game average and Jasmin Schelhaas averages 5.0 points per game. Boone leads the team with 15 made three-point baskets and she is converting 35.7 percent of her long shots. Kok is tops in assists with 19 and Jessica Jelsema has 16.
Dordt is 10-1 in men’s play and 3-0 in the GPAC with wins over Midland, Doane and Mount Marty. The Defenders have won seven games in a row dating back to a loss to Davenport on November 8.
Dordt is outscoring teams 92.6-76.3 and is outrebounding teams 44.1-28.2. The Defenders have made 50.7 percent of their field goals and 38 percent of their three-point shots. Teams are converting 45.4 percent of their field goals against Dordt and the Defenders also make 70.7 percent of the free throws they try. Dordt is 234-311 from the charity stripe and opponents are 158-228. Dordt has committed 145 turnovers through 11 games while foes have 139 turnovers.
Kyle Lindbergh leads four players in double figures with a 19.0 points per game average and he is taking down an average of 10.3 rebounds per game. Dalton Franken’s scoring average is 14.3 and he takes down 4.5 rebounds. Austin Katje has a 13.5 points per game average and is 25-52 from the three-point line and Tyler Wolterstorff’s scoring average is 11.5. Nathan Rindels and Alex Terpstra are scoring 8.2 and 7.5 points per game respectively and David Den Herder is at 7.0 points per game with 4.8 rebounds per contest. Rindels is averaging 4.5 rebounds per outing and leads the team with 41 assists. Lindbergh is converting 60.3 percent of his field goals and Den Herder has converted a team high 65.9 percent of his field goals.
LAST TIME… Briar Cliff beat Dakota Wesleyan 89-88 on Tuesday night in Sioux City after trailing 41-39 at halftime. The Chargers held a 43-42 rebounding advantage and converted 46 percent of their field goals and 26-38 free throws. Dakota Wesleyan made 34-75 field goals but only converted 11-15 free throws. Both teams had 18 turnovers. Kaylee Blake and Slone Masters each had 15 and Morgan Hansen converted for 14 points and six rebounds. Shipley and Jordan Sanger had 13 and 12 points respectively off the bench.
The Dordt women beat Mount Marty 68-59 after trailing by as many ten points in the first half in Yankton, South Dakota on November 26. Kok and Van Dyke each had 14 points and Van Dyke grabbed nine rebounds and Elise Maresh had 12 points Kim Kroeze came off the bench for eight.
The Briar Cliff men lost a 79-72 decision to Bellevue on November 30 in Bellevue, Nebraska. The Chargers were 21-48 from the floor and 24-27 on free throws but got outrebounded by a slight 31-29 difference. Bellevue shot 29-55 from the field for 53 percent. Bellevue had 15 turnovers to 18 for the Chargers. Otting had 25 points while converting 14-14 free throws and Harreld scored 18.
The Defender men beat Central 98-76 after leading 49-29 at halftime on Saturday, November 30 in men’s basketball. The Defenders made over 50 percent of their field goals and held Central to 42.2 percent field goal shooting. Dordt enjoyed a 49-29 rebounding advantage and made 7-14 three-point field goals. Kyle Lindbergh had 21 points and Dalton Franken 18 with Tyler Wolterstorff adding 15 and David Den Herder had 14 points. Lindbergh topped the team with 10 rebounds and Nathan Rindels had six. Patrick Knoblauch had a team high six assists and Wolterstorff four.
HISTORY… This will be the 89th meeting between these women’s teams with Briar Cliff holding a 41-37 advantage. The Defenders won the December 15, 2012 meeting 91-74 after holding a 44-33 halftime edge. Dordt converted 24-31 free throws and 30-53 field goals and turned the ball over 21 times. Briar Cliff was held to 26-59 field goal shooting and converted 16-24 free throws. Dordt held a 38-28 rebounding edge and had four players score in double figures. Van Dyke had 19 points and six rebounds and Elise Maresh scored 16 with Danelle Boone coming off the bench for 15. Briar Cliff’s Kelsey Evans scored 20 and Kela Cihak had 12 points.
January 26, 2013 the two teams met in Sioux City with Briar Cliff taking an 88-67 win after leading 32-31 at halftime. Dordt was forced into 31 turnovers and got outrebounded 41-33. Van Dyke had 18 points and eight rebounds and Kayla Broekhuis had 16 points and six assists. Briar Cliff was paced by Regan Cooper with 20 points in a reserve role and Jordan Sanger had 19 points.
The Defenders and Chargers have played 89 times in men’s basketball with Briar Cliff holding a 56-33 advantage. Dordt won all three meetings last season. Dordt turned the Chargers away on December 15 in Sioux Center by a 74-58 margin with Cliff Warner, Trevor Wolterstorff and Jordan Vogel all scoring 15. Briar Cliff’s top scorer was Turner Fahey with nine and Clay Harreld and Jake Shipley both had eight.
The second meeting was at the Newman Flanagan Center in Sioux City on January 26 and the Defenders won 77-58 after leading 42-31 at halftime. Austin Katje led the Defenders with 17 and Jordan Vogel added 16 with six rebounds. Cliff Warner had 14 and Trevor Wolterstorff 10 with eight rebounds. Taylor Murren topped the Chargers with 12 and Otting had nine while going 3-10 from the field.
February 20 the teams met in the GPAC Quarterfinals with Dordt winning 91-76 after leading 44-34 at halftime. Chris Sievers had a team high 23 points with six rebounds and Trevor Wolterstorff added 17 with eight rebounds. Otting had 24 to pace the Chargers and was 7-11 from the floor and 6-6 on three-point shots.
NEXT… Briar Cliff will travel to Hastings on Saturday, December 7.
The Defender women and men will travel to Seward, Nebraska to face Concordia on Saturday, December 7 and they will be on the road on Wednesday, December 11 to face Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, South Dakota.
MILESTONES… Austin Katje has moved into a tie with Don Van Den Top on the all-time scoring list with 1,135 points and he has 208 total three-pointers. Kyle Lindbergh moved into the 1,000 point club this past weekend and has 1,022 and stands 30th all-time. Lindbergh has 713 career rebounds and is sixth all-time.
Kara Van Dyke earned a spot in the 1,000 point club on the women’s side and is 14th all-time with 1,008 points and she is 10th all-time with 634 rebounds.
