Florence Portfolio on display at Dordt College

January 14, 2014

During the summer of 1993, six Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA) artists lived and worked together in Florence, Italy, where their collaborative artistic efforts produced a portfolio of works now on display in the Dordt College Campus Center Art Gallery through February 16. The community is welcome to view the exhibit free every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The portfolio contains 20 etchings produced by Christine Anderson (New York City), Tanja Butler (Beverly, Massachusetts), Wayne Forte (Laguna Niguel, California), Bruce Herman (Gloucester, Massachusetts), Edward Knippers (Arlington, Virginia), and Duncan Simcoe (Orange, California). A stone presentation box was also created by Ted Prescott (Grantham, Pennsylvania).

The plates included in the Florence Portfolio depict the theme “Sacrifice in the Old and New Testaments” and were created in Santa Reparata Graphic Art Centre in Florence. The Florence Portfolio was printed by Normal Editions Workshop of Illinois State University at Normal, under the direction of Richard Finch. The handmade paper for the project was created by Meda and Veda Rives, Mirror Image Press, Virden, Illinois.

The Florence Portfolio is in the permanent collections of the Vatican Museum of Contemporary Religious Art, the Grunwald Center for Graphic Arts at the UCLA Hammer Museum, and several college, university, and private collections. This piece of the portfolio was loaned to Dordt College from Calvin College in Michigan.

Dordt College offers more than 90 programs of study, including an art and design degree with emphases in art education, art history, fine art studio, graphic design, and pre-architectural art.
