Experience the diversity of cultures in Sioux Center at the Dordt College Cultural Fair
February 10, 2014
International cuisine, cultural dance, and fashion styles from around the world will converge in a colorful and dynamic event at Dordt College next week.
The college’s Students Without Borders cross-cultural club is hosting the annual Cultural Fair on Saturday, February 22, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the De Yager Activity Center.
The Cultural Fair engages students and community members in other cultures, helping participants develop a broader understanding of God’s creation and a deeper appreciation of our place in it. This year’s free event features games, posters, food to sample, and a variety of activities for the entire family.
The colorful fashion show, an audience favorite, will be held the final hour and will feature traditional clothing from various countries, as well as singing, dancing, and other unique performances.
Winnie Obiero, a Dordt College sophomore from Kenya, is helping produce this year’s event. She says, “The international student body at Dordt College is growing every year, and we have more diverse cultural representation from many parts of the world, including Indonesia, Mongolia, and Kenya.” Dordt College’s current student body is comprised of nearly 10 percent of international students who have come from more than 25 countries.
“Students are eager and excited to share a part of their culture with the community,” says Obiero. “For people in the area who haven’t traveled to other continents or countries, this will be a good opportunity for them to learn something new about other countries.”
