Washington Monthly lists Dordt in Top 100

August 9, 2014

Dordt College has been listed among the top 100 baccalaureate colleges in the country by Washington Monthly. It was also listed as a “Best Bang for the Buck” school along with only two other Iowa colleges: Clarke University and Mount Mercy University.

The magazine publishes rankings of national universities, liberal arts colleges, master’s universities, and baccalaureate colleges. The rankings are based on the magazine’s measure of each institution’s commitment to research and service as well as alumni social mobility.

“Dordt College takes seriously God’s call to be active in our culture,” said Dr. Erik Hoekstra, president of Dordt College. “It’s affirming to have Washington Monthly recognize that the Dordt curricular and co-curricular programs help students realize that part of their discipleship is serving others as volunteers in a variety of areas.”

Dordt students demonstrated a commitment to service in the last year performing 27,000 hours of community service and service learning. Approximately 60 percent of the student body recorded serving the community by tutoring children, leading activities at the Kidzone afterschool program, ministering with Cornerstone Prison Church Ministry, cleaning up after an ice storm, and going on week-long and two-week-long mission trips around the world.

Students and professors at Dordt College also are doing research in a variety of areas. This summer 28 students are working with professors on research projects in fields ranging from engineering and environmental science to physics and statistics. These opportunities are funded in part by the Andreas Center and by generous alumni of the college.
