SNOW CHALLENGE

Details

When

The 48-hour carving frenzy starts at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 7, and ends at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 9. We’ll have lights set up at night, so you can sculpt whenever and for however long you like.

Where

On Dordt’s campus between the B.J. Haan Auditorium and the Kuyper Apartments.

Space

Only 10 teams can compete because the size of the sculptures and the amount of room available. So along with registration info, teams will need to submit an 8-inch by 11-inch drawing of the sculpture you want to create. You’ll need to give it a title and write a short description. If your team is selected, you’ll be notified by Monday, February 6.

The Block

Your team will be given one snow block that is 4 feet tall, 4 feet wide, and 4 feet deep. The block should be used entirely and should be sculpted on all sides. Only the original block of snow may be used to create the sculpture. Sculptures may be expanded in any direction on any or all sides at the discretion of the team; however, only the original volume of snow may be utilized. No additional snow may be added.

Tools and Materials

Bring your own hand tools. No power tools are permitted. A set of tools could include a snow shovel, a snow scoop, a straight edge ice scraper, a ladder, and scaffolding. The only materials allowed are snow, ice, and water. No colorants may be added and no other materials may be used in the sculpture. No support or armature may be used in or on the final sculpture—this includes the use of ice as an armature.

The Design

Your work must be a true original. You are required to submit a design that has never been sculpted by you or any other teams at another event.

The Team

Teams need at least three members, but you may decide to have more (having too many sculptors is not necessarily helpful). It is also a good idea to have a team member who is devoted to running errands.

Awards

First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded by the official event judge. Winners will receive engraved trophies (and lots of glory!).

Cost

$35 per team. Checks can be made out to Dordt College with 2013 Snow Challenge in the memo line. If the weather causes us to cancel, we’ll refund you the cost.
