Overview
The environmental studies program at Dordt College goes beyond the programs you'll find at public universities. Here you'll be challenged to follow God's call to be stewards of the earth in both your lifestyle and profession.
This interdisciplinary major has a biblical, Christian perspective at its core.
"You might call it environmental evangelism," says Dr. Robb De Haan when describing the teaching of Christian stewardship by example.
You'll gain professional insight through advanced technical training and probing analysis of contemporary worldviews.
If you like hands-on learning, our environmental studies major is for you.
- Past students designed a restoration plan for a tall grass prairie on Dordt's campus, and current students are learning from and helping manage this prairie.
- Classroom learning is supplemented by discussions, guest lectures by experts in the field, and conference attendance.
- Two student clubs, Justice Matters and Creation Care, concretely help students live as good environmental stewards.
- Field trips are an integral part of Dordt's environmental studies courses. You will make visits to national wildlife refuges, windfarms, fossil beds, and other sites.
- To complete your major you'll either take a directed research course applying your knowledge and skills in a concrete project, participate in an internship, or enroll in an off-campus program.
- In a senior seminar on creation stewardship you'll put the principles and knowledge you've learned into practice by selecting a project that helps addresses a specific environmental challenge or opportunity.
