Dordt-Midland Basketball Saturday

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host Midland  in GPAC basketball Saturday, January 12.  The women’s contest starts at 2:00 and the men will get underway at 4:00.   The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu.  Results will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics  and at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Midland women are 7-12 this season and 2-8 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  The Warriors have wins over Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan to their credit in league play and are 2-5 in their last seven games.

Midland scored 80 points in a win over Dakota State on January 5 marking the first time they have reached that point since starting the season with three straight plus-80 performances.  The Fremont, Nebraska based school has scored 69.1 points per outing and allow 73.4 points per contest.  The Warriors average 46.5 rebounds per game and give up 37.6 rebounds per outing but have struggled with turnovers where they have committed 416 through 19 games while forcing 317 turnovers.  Midland doesn’t rely heavily on the three-point shot converting 84-284 attempts this season for 29.6 percent.  They do convert 38.4 percent of their field goals and allow opponents to make 41 percent of the shots taken from the floor.

Taylor Shepard tops the team with 12.5 points per game to go with 8.2 rebounds per contest.  Joelle Anderson knocks down 11.1 points per game and gets 5.5 rebounds and Jamilah Johnson is adding 10.6 points per game and she leads the team with 51 assists and 29 steals.  Jami Thramer tops the team with 9.2 rebounds and she adds 8.1 points per game while converting 50.6 percent of her field goals.  Kellie Page is the leading three-point shooter and has made 31-76 long shots for 40.8 percent success.

The Midland men stand 11-7 overall and are 6-4 in the GPAC and have lost two games in a row since reeling off seven games in a row from December 8 through January 2. 

The Warriors convert 77.2 points per game and allow 68.8 points per contest while making 48.2 percent of the field goals they try.  Opponents are shooting for 45.3 percent efficiency and the Warriors hold a 36.2-32.7 rebounding advantage.  Midland has forced 263 turnovers and have committed 215.  Midland has taken nearly 40 percent of its field goals from the three-point line and are 142-406 for the season. 

James Parrott tops the team with 18.5 points per game and he makes 53.6 percent of his field goal attempts which includes 28-78 three-point shots.  Parrott also takes down 5.2 rebounds and has 39 assists in 18 games with 42 blocked shots.  Ben Imig has a 12.3 points per game average and leads the team with 71 assists.  Galen Gullie knocks down 11.0 points per game with 60 assists and he leads the team in made three-pointers with 35.  Jerome Vaughn averages a team high 7.7 rebounds and is good for 10.6 points per game while converting 65.9 percent of his field goals. 

DEFENDER NOTES…The Defender women are 11-9 overall and 5-5 in the GPAC and have won four of their last five games dating back to a win over Briar Cliff on December 15.  The Defenders have scored 80 or more points in seven games this season and are 7-1 in those games. 

Dordt outscores teams 70.4-60.8 and hold a 37.9-36.3 rebounding edge.  Dordt converts 41 percent of its field goals and teams are making 37.9 percent.  The Defenders are making 36 percent of its three-point shots and opponents are converting 29.8 percent of its long shots. 

Kara Van Dyke tops the team with a 13.8 points per game average to go with a team high 7.7 rebounds.  Kayla Broekhuis has a 12.4 points per game average and leads the team with 39 made three-pointers out of 97 attempts.  Brianna Spronk is scoring 11.1 points per game and leads the team with 115 free throws attempted and 76 makes.  Elise Maresh has lifted her scoring average to 10.1 points per game and she gets 6.0 rebounds per outing.  Jasmin Schelhaas and Danelle Boone are adding 7.6 and 6.9 points per game respectively.

The Defender men had their six game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night when they lost to Dakota State.  Dordt is 15-4 overall and 7-3 in league play while holding a no. 10 ranking the most recent NAIA Division II Poll.  When Dordt holds its opponents under 80 points the Defenders are 14-1.

The Defenders hold a 79.7-67.6 scoring average advantage and a 39.4-30.6 rebounding advantage.  Dordt is converting 50.1 percent of its field goals and allow 41.5 percent shooting.

Cliff Warner is averaging 15.1 points per game and is 70-148 on three-point shots for 47.3 percent success.  Warner also has 72 assists in 19 games and has 22 steals.  Trevor Wolterstorff has a 14.2 points per game average to go with 6.4 rebounds per game and his shooting percentage is 58.3.  Jordan Vogel is averaging 12.3 points per game with 5.1 rebounds and he is making 63 percent of his field goals.  Austin Katje is at 9.9 points per game and Chris Sievers is scoring 9.1.  Both Katje and Sievers average 3.6 rebounds per game.  Kyle Lindbergh is scoring 6.7 points and gets to 5.8 rebounds and has a team high 25 steals. 

NEXT… Midland will host Concordia on Wednesday, January 16 while the Defenders will travel to Yankton, South Dakota to face Mount Marty on Wednesday night.

LAST TIME… The Midland women lost to Briar Cliff in Sioux City on January 9 by a final of 86-72 after leading 39-34 at halftime.  The Warriors were forced into 30 turnovers while converting 25-69 shots from the floor and they held a 45-34 rebounding advantage.  Briar Cliff made 50 percent of its field goals and got to the free throw line 27 times and made 18.  Kellie Page scored 24 and Shepard added 15 points and game high 16 rebounds.  Jamilah Johnson converted for 19 poitns and had five assists.

The Defenders had just enough to hold off the Dakota State Lady T’s on Wednesday night in Madison, South Dakota by an 81-79 margin.  The Defenders got a pair of free throws late by Jasmin Schelhaas to seal the win after leading 76-51.  Dordt held a 33-30 rebounding advantage but allowed the hosts to make 15-26 three-pointers.  Dordt tossed in12-20 three-point shots and was 31-60 from the field.  Kayla Broekhuis made her first seven shots and ended with 20 points which included six three-point baskets.  Brianna Spronk scored 15 and Kara Van Dyke added 13 points with 10 rebounds, five assists and five blocked shots.

The Midland men lost a 64-51 decision to Briar Cliff on Wednesday night after trailing 34-26 at halftime.  The Warriors made 18-63 field goals for 28.6 percent in the loss and Briar Cliff converted 22-55 for 40 percent.  Midland held a 40-39 rebounding edge and had 12 offensive rebounds.  Dylan Travis scored a team high 13 points off the bench while Jerome Vaughn scored eight.  James Parrott led the Warriors with seven rebounds and was limited to 2-12 shooting from the floor.

The Defender men trailed Dakota State 40-32 at halftime in Madison, South Dakota on Wednesday night and got no closer than five in the second half before falling 83-65.  Dordt was led by Jordan Vogel and Trevor Wolterstorff with 16 points each and Austin Katje added 14.  Tyler Wolterstorff came off the bench and scored nine and had six rebounds.

SERIES… The Dordt women lead the series 12-4 and won the meeting between these two on December 1 by a 70-63 margin.  Dordt converted 25-40 free throws in the win and forced 26 turnovers while committing 19.  Brianna Spronk scored 25 for the Defenders with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.  Mycah Hulst had ten points with nine rebounds and Jasmin Schelhaas hit for eight points.  Joelle Anderson scored 20 to lead Midland and Danielle Stephan had 12 points as a reserve. 

Dordt leads the series 15-3 after surrendering a second half lead after fighting back from a 48-43 halftime deficit in Fremont, Nebraska on December 1.  The Defenders made 35-65 shots for 53.3 percent success but allowed Midland to make 34-55 field goals for 61.8 percent success.  Dordt held a 34-28 rebounding advantage.  Jordan Vogel, Chris Sievers and Cliff Warner all had 15 points while Trevor Wolterstorff and Austin Katje both had 13 points.  Galen Gullie paced Midland with 21 and James Parrott was good for 19.  Jalen Hueser came off the bench to score 14 and was 4-4 from the three-point line.
