Students engage in service during spring break
March 8, 2013
Approximately 135 students from Dordt College are spending their spring break on service projects throughout the U.S. and Canada. As part of an ongoing desire to make service a part of everyday life, these students have chosen to participate in a week-long mission trip with PLIA (Putting Love Into Action).
Beginning on March 8, students traveled to one of the following locations: Argentine, Kansas; Atlanta, Georgia; Salt Lake City, Utah; Camden, New Jersey; Cincinnati, Ohio; Cary, Mississippi; Grand Junction, Colorado; Inez, Kentucky; Jackson, Mississippi; Neon, Kentucky; New Orleans, Louisiana; Shiprock, New Mexico; Denver, Colorado; and Toronto, Canada.
At the sites, students will do a wide variety of jobs, including home repair and painting, cleanup of center grounds or facilities, and childcare or teaching. They also will cultivate long-term relationships between Dordt and the organization the group is serving. While on the trip, groups also typically spend some time on recreation and sightseeing.
Other students will spend spring break traveling with the Dordt College Concert Band and Chamber Orchestra on a tour with performances in South Dakota, Montana, Alberta, Washington, Idaho, and Colorado. Several Defender athletic teams will continue play during break, including the men’s basketball team, which qualified for a trip to the NAIA national tournament for the second year in a row. The tournament is held at College of the Ozarks in Missouri.
