What’s new at Dordt College

August 26, 2013

Dordt College welcomes more than 400 new students and almost 1,000 returning students to campus this week, and they will be greeted with several changes and updates to the campus:

Science and Technology Center
After a slow start due to wet weather this spring, construction work on Phase 1 of the Science and Technology Center is on schedule. Phase 1 construction adds a link joining the Ribbens Academic Complex to the science building and expands the south side of the building to provide lab space for the engineering program.

Work began immediately following commencement with the removal of the greenhouse and the access road, rerouting the road to the B.J. Haan parking lot to make space for the new engineering lab. In August, construction on the block walls of the link began, dramatically changing the appearance of the building. For more information, visit www.dordt.edu/science_building_project.

Alumni and President’s House
Last year the college began renovating and swapping the functions of the Alumni House and President’s House.

The new Alumni House has five bedrooms—each with its own bathroom—available to alumni and friends of the college. With a large great room, the house is an excellent place for small family reunion or alumni roommate gatherings. To book a room, visit www.dordt.edu/campus/alumni_house.

Sculpture
A new sculpture has been installed on the east side of campus called Enlaced: A Burning Bush, Psalm 19. Its color and design are reminiscent of the biblical story of Moses and the burning bush.

Additionally, “the design of this sculpture is guided by a sense of an intertwining of a Christian perspective that’s found within Dordt College’s academic community,” said the sculpture’s creator, Dordt College Art Professor David Versluis. “This sculpture piece tries to convey this aspect by weaving together seven upright metallic forms. The individual upright pieces are grouped into a regular pattern and yet suggest variety with unity through the columns of different heights.”

Dordt Dining Services
Serving delicious, nutritious food is the goal of the college’s new dining services provider. The Zeeland, Michigan-based company serves more than 25 different colleges. Creative Dining Services, parent company of Dordt Dining Services, employs a staff nutritionist to address student dietary needs and is aligned with the mission of Dordt College as a distinctively Christian institution.

Library
The library staff undertook a full review of all print journal subscriptions, calling on faculty members to help determine which journals were “must-haves,” which subscriptions could be canceled, and which journals should be added to the collection. Their efforts led to a more useful collection and significant cost savings.

The library was able to cancel 73 print titles, change 25 titles from print to online-only, and add 894 new e-journal titles, saving more than $8,500 in the process.

New emphasis added
The engineering department added chemical engineering to its list of concentrations. Chemical engineers develop equipment and processes that convert both natural and recycled resources into fuels and materials for the everyday products that we use.

Engineering has consistently been one of Dordt College’s top five majors, and Dordt is one of only a few Christian colleges that has been fully accredited for over 20 years (the engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.com).

Mobile Website
Dordt launched a mobile website over the summer. The site provides a succinct overview of the college and many of its key webpages in a mobile-friendly format geared toward prospective students.

The site includes information about sports, admissions, academics, and news. Mobile website users will automatically be directed to the site when they visit Dordt’s homepage, and desktop or tablet users can view it by going to m.dordt.edu. Visitors to the site will also have easy access to Dordt’s main website for more detailed information on the college.
