Great music events during Defender Days

For the first time, Dordt College is hosting Defender Days, combining the annual Parents Weekend and Alumni Weekend. The campus-wide celebration, held October 18 and 19, features a wide range of events, including these music concerts:

Small Music Festival
Jazz Band (directed by Scott Linder), Kantorei, and Bella Voce (both directed by Dr. Benjamin Kornelis), will perform on Friday, October 18, at 3 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium.

Jazz Band will perform a variety of big band-style music.

Kantorei will sing Al Fedak’s setting of To Everything There is a Season, Weelkes’ madrigal As Vesta Was From Latmos Hill Descending, and a vocal jazz arrangement of When She Loved Me from Toy Story.

Bella Voce will perform an arrangement of the gospel song Goin’ Up a Yonder, featuring soloist Lisa Smith of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mister Sandman; an arrangement of tunes from Pitch Perfect, featuring Haeley Dirksen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Madeline Wesselius of Sioux Center; and Blessing by Katie Moran Bart.

Fall Music Festival
Large ensembles will perform on Friday, October 18, at 7 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. Instrumental performances include the Campus-Community Band, Chamber Orchestra, and Concert Band, all conducted by Yurii Henriques. Vocal ensembles performing include Chorale and Concert Choir, both directed by Dr. Benjamin Kornelis.

Campus-Community Band will perform W. Francis McBeth’s Chant and Jubilo, E.E. Bagley’s National Emblem, James Curnow’s The Lion of Lucerne, and Philip Gordon’s Italian Masters Suite.

Chamber Orchestra will perform Gustav Holst’s Brook Green Suite, Bach’s “Gigue” from Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 6, and Mozart’s Serenade No. 9.

Concert Band will perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Op. 96 and Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F.

Chorale will sing Gorczycki’s In Virtute Tua Domine and “Agnus Dei” from William Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices. They will also perform Kevin Memley’s contemporary setting of Byron’s She Walks in Beauty and a new arrangement of the spiritual song Witness featuring soloist Shannon Vanden Berg of Sioux Center.

Concert Choir will perform Cary Ratcliff’s Praise God for the Breath of Life, Brahms’s Dem dunkeln Schoss, Paul Carey’s arrangement of the American hymn Blow Ye the Trumpet, Blow, and a song from the Bollywood film Sivaji titled Balleilakka.

The men of the choirs will combine to sing an arrangement of O Love that Will Not Let Me Go, and both choirs will combine to sing Aaron Copland’s The Promise of Living.

Showcase Organ Recital
Saturday, October 19, at 2 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. This concert, which includes student and faculty performers, will showcase the college’s magnificent 57-rank, three-manual mechanical action Casavant pipe organ.
