November 8, 2013
Artist Timothy R. Botts will his display recently completed work in an exhibit titled Bound for Glory. The collection for Advent is on display November 18 through January 8, 2014, in the Dordt College Campus Center Art Gallery. A reception will be held Monday, November 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., with the artist talking at 7:15.
Botts’ work reaches back to letterforms as old as the first century and combines them with contemporary graphic design principles to express the meaning of important words. He is interested in interweaving back¬ground, text, and image so that they become one. He strives to strike a balance between visual expression and a degree of legibility with the goal of giving a face to that which is spirit.
“With this new body of work, I want to celebrate the incredible gift of music that African Americans gave to the church and to the whole world. It is especially amazing that these people, many of them enslaved by Christians, saw beyond their owners’ hypocrisy and met the real Jesus,” says Botts. “I pray that the visual interpretations of this spirit-filled music will be instruments of healing and reconciliation among us.
For 40 years, Botts designed more than 600 books for Tyndale House Publishers where he was senior art director before retiring in 2012. Ten books of his own work are published, including Doorposts, Messiah, and a Bible illustrated in his calligraphy. An instructor with College of DuPage, Botts helped form Masterpiece Ministries in 1995, an outreach to high school students in the arts. His artwork is part of the permanent collection of the Newberry Library in Chicago.
