Directors
The DCSIMS program is directed by Dr. Darren Stoub, a full-time faculty member in chemistry and biochemistry at Dordt College. Drs. Tony Jelsma and Carl Fictorie, also full-time faculty in biology and chemistry at Dordt, will be participating with the DCSIBS program.
Dr. Darren Stoub, DCSIBS director
Dr. Stoub is trained in organic chemistry (Ph.D. in 1998), molecular biophysics and biochemistry (research fellow 1998–2000) and medicinal chemistry (research scientist since 2000). Dr. Stoub has dedicated his career to training students at the undergraduate and graduate level since 2000. He has served as the primary mentor for more than 100 undergraduate, graduate, and high school students in extended summer and/or academic year research projects in chemistry, biology, and biochemistry, with the bulk of these students conducting research in medicinal biochemistry. Dr. Stoub is active in pedagogical research with an emphasis in active learning and discovery-based and project-based methods of inquiry. Dr. Stoub has received numerous federal and private grants to fund his research and awards for his research and mentoring of undergraduate students. He has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles and has served as a reviewer of research proposals for the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and the Research Corporation.
Dr. Tony Jelsma, DCSIBS advisor
Dr. Jelsma obtained his Ph.D. in cancer research from McMaster University, after which he did postdoctoral cancer research in England and nerve regeneration research in Montreal. He taught at Crandall University before coming to Dordt. His academic and research interests are in molecular biology, developmental biology, and Intelligent Design. In collaboration with other science professors he has an active student summer research internships in cellular and molecular biology. Some of this work was recently published. Other research is being prepared for publication while work in several fields is continuing.
Dr. Carl Fictorie, DCSIBS advisor
Dr. Fictorie joined the faculty in 1995 and teaches general chemistry, quantitative analysis, physical chemistry, environmental chemistry, and inorganic chemistry. In addition, he advises pre-medical students and is a co-director of the Kuyper Scholars Program with Dr. Mary Dengler. He holds a B.A. from Dordt College and a Ph.D. in materials chemistry from the University of Minnesota. His special areas of interest are the preparation of biomass-based catalysts for the synthesis of biodiesel and the philosophy of chemistry.
