Ross Douma, a native of Sanborn, Iowa, was named head coach of the Dordt College men’s basketball program in March 2009.

Douma is 97-34 on the Dordt bench and led the 2011-12 and 2012-13 teams to berths at the NAIA Division II National Tournament. Both seasons the Defenders advanced to the Elite Eight Round. The 2011-12 team won the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season crown and the 2012-13 team claimed the GPAC post-season tournament title. Douma was named the Conference Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season. 

The Defenders 2010-2011 team advanced to the GPAC post-season championship game in Douma’s second season. Seven players have earned all-GPAC First-Team honors under Douma.

Prior to arriving at Dordt, Douma coached high school basketball for 10 years at Waukee, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, and Chicago Christian and compiled a 142-103 record in those 10 years. Douma’s 2008 Waukee team qualified for the Class 4A Iowa High School State Tournament.

Douma served as head coach at Hartley Melvin Sanborn from 1998 to 2001 and led the Hawks to their first and only district championship in school history. While at Chicago Christian he coached the team to two 20-win seasons in 2004-05 and 2005-06 during his four-year stint at the school. His 2003-04 and 2004-05 teams at Chicago Christian earned regional titles. Douma moved to Waukee before the 2006-07 season.

He was named the District Coach of the Year in 2008 and also was selected as the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005.

Douma served as a teacher, assistant principal, and dean of students at his previous stops and holds a bachelor of arts degree from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa (1995). He earned his master of arts degree from Governors State University in University Park, Illinois in 2006.

Douma was an all-state basketball player at Western Christian in Hull, Iowa, and was a member of three national tournament qualifying teams at Northwestern.
