Experience:

Prior to teaching at Dordt, I worked as a Faith Outreach Organizer for Bread for the World, a Christian organization working to end hunger.  As an organizer, I worked with church and campus groups to advocate for better, more comprehensive responses to hunger and poverty.

I also worked as a Service Coordinator with Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, helping to coordinate supportive services for senior citizens to help them maintain independent living as long as possible.

Education:

PhD in progress at University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD. Political Science and Public Administration

Masters in Social Work (MSW), 2004, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.  Focus: Management in Human Services and Community and Social Systems

Bachelors in Social Work (BSW), 2002, Dordt College, Sioux Center, IA.

Academic, Professional and Personal Interests:

I have special interest in looking at how Christians and society have responded to the needs of vulnerable people.  I study the intersection of this response among individuals, church, community non-profits and various levels of the government.  I am especially passionate about hunger issues and protecting and nurturing healthy families and kids.  One of the most meaningful things about social work to me is being able to do as a professional what God calls us all to: "Learn to do right!  Seek justice, encourage the oppressed.  Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow." [Isaiah 1:17]  I get to work each day with my colleagues in the social work program and with social work majors who are working to respond to needs in a hurting world.  I serve on various community nonprofit boards and in my church.

I am married and have two little kids who keep me busy and life entertaining.  I like to read, watch baseball, and spend time outside during the warmer months of the year.
