Basketball On Road Saturday

GAMETIME...Dordt College will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to face Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, December 8 in women’s and men’s basketball. The women’s game gets underway at 2:00 with the men to follow at 4:00. The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu. SCOUTING REPORT… The Nebraska Wesleyan women are 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the GPAC with a win this season over Macalester. Three of the four losses this season for the Prairie Wolves in conference play have come to Concordia (91-61), Briar Cliff (77-39) and Northwestern (103-61).
The Wolves allow 74.7 points per game on average and score 55.9. Wesleyan is getting outrebounded 43.6-36.1 and have committed 162 turnovers to 140 for opponents. Mallory Shanahan scores 16.6 points per game with 9.9 rebounds. Janelle Baal is good for 7.3 points per game and Kaitlyn Janata is scoring at a 6.4 clip with 4.1 rebounds. Baal is 10-30 on three-point shots and Emily Leines converts 5.1 points per game.
The Nebraska Wesleyan men are 4-4 overall and 0-4 in the GPAC. The wins for Wesleyan outside the conference are over Concordia (Illinois), Dominican, Simpson and Austin. The losses in league play are to Concordia (68-65), Briar Cliff (71-64), Northwestern (79-68) and Hastings (64-58). The Wolves have lost four in a row dating back to a 69-61win over Austin.
Wesleyan is averaging 70.1 points per game while giving up 64.4 points per game and they convert 48.8 percent of their shots while opponents are making 42.2 percent. Wesleyan has been outrebounded on average 32.4-33.4.
Eric Jackson scores 11.7 points per game to lead the Wolves and has 16 assists and makes 42.6 percent of the shots he takes. Tim Schweitzer is good for 11.3 points per game and he grabs 4.6 rebounds and has made 60.3 percent of his shots. Trent Scheitel leads the team with a 6.9 rebounding average and he is good for 8.9 points per contest. Jonah Bradley is at 8.0 points per game for an average and Byron Thompson leads the team in assists with a 4.0 average.
DEFENDER NOTES… The Dordt College women are 5-7 this season and stand 2-3 in the GPAC. Dordt’s win sin the league are over Doane (55-46) and Midland (70-63). The losses have come to Mount Marty (55-51), Dakota Wesleyan (95-84) and Northwestern (71-51). Dordt has split their last six games and have won two in a row once this season.
Kara Van Dyke leads the team with a 14.4 points per game average and has led the team in six games this season. Van Dyke also pulls down a team high 7.8 rebounds per game and has a 51.7 percent success rate from the floor including 14-29 on three-point shots. Brianna Spronk gets 11.3 points per game with 5.8 rebounds and she has made 51-73 free throw attempts. Kayla Broekhuis converts 10.9 points per game and Elise Maresh is averaging 8.4 points per game to go with 6.2 rebounds.
The Defender men are 9-2 this season and 3-2 in the league after starting the season 6-0. Dordt is outscoring teams 83.5-65.4 and convert 51.4 percent of its field goals while outrebounding teams 39.0-30.4. Dordt has made more free throws, 173, than opponents have attempted, 166. AS a team the Defenders are making 41.9 percent of the three-point shots they attempt.
Cliff Warner converts 14.8 points per game and is shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and 47.6 percent on three-point attempts. Warner is the team leader with 4.0 assists per game. Trevor Wolterstorff contributes 13.8 points per game and is taking down a team high 6.1 rebounds per game and converts 58.8 percent of his field goals. Jordan Vogel contributes 12.5 points per game and is making 69.6 percent of his field goal attempts. Austin Katje is good for 11.4 points per game and is 17-36 on three-point shots with 3.9 rebounds per outing. Chris Sievers has lifted his scoring average to 9.1 points per game while Kyle Lindbergh and Shawn Keizer each make 7.5 ad 7.4 points per game.
NEXT… Dordt will be on the road to face Morningside on Wednesday night while Nebraska Wesleyan will face Midland in Fremont, Nebraska on Wednesday.
LAST TIME… The Defender women were on the short end of a 71-51 decision to Northwestern after trailing 37-26 at halftime. Dordt was outrebounded 43-30 and turned the ball over 26 times while converting 14-41 field goals to 27-64 shooting for Northwestern. Kara Van Dyke paced Dordt with 22 points and she had six rebounds with four steals and two blocked shots. Kayla Broekhuis had ten points with three steals and four turnovers.
Nebraska Wesleyan lost a 56-49 women’s basketball game on Wednesday in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Prairie Wolves were down 19-14 at halftime and were outscored 37-35 in the second half in their seventh loss of the season and fourth in the GPAC. The Wolves were 18-54 from the field for 33.3 percent in the loss while Hastings made 21-57 attempts but just 10-22 free throws. The Broncos also held a 45-37 rebounding advantage and both had 12 turnovers. Mallory Shanahan had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead Nebraska Wesleyan.
The Defender men trailed by 13 early but cut the gap to 33-26 against Northwestern on Wednesday night and used a 14-0 run to go from down eight to up six and never led by less than three in the final 14 minutes in taking a 64-56 win at the De Witt Gym in the match up of teams ranked in the top-10. Trevor Wolterstorff had 19 points and six rebounds and Austin Katje had 16 points and six rebounds with a steal. Cliff Warner added nine points and three assists with two steals.
Hastings had a 32-27 halftime lead and went on to beat Wesleyan 64-58. Hastings converted 21-59 field goals and 17-20 free throws to forge the win. Wesleyan was 21-54 from the field and 13-24 from the free throw line. Wesleyan committed 19 turnovers to 14 for the Broncos. Trevor Johnson had 13 points off of the bench for Nebraska Wesleyan with six rebounds. Eric Jackson added 12 points and had three assists.
RANKINGS...The NAIA Division II women’s poll includes Concordia no. 1; Morningside no. 3; Briar Cliff no. 5; Northwestern no. 8 while Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings are receiving votes.
The men’s poll features Dordt no. 7; Northwestern no. 9; Doane no. 14; Briar Cliff no. 25 with Hastings receiving votes. Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) is no. 1 in this week’s poll.
SERIES…The Dordt women lead the series 11-7 with each team winning on the road in the series last year. Dordt lost 63-60 on December 10, 2011 after the score was tied at 28-28 at halftime. Shea Rasmussen scored a game high 32 points for the Wolves while Dordt was paced by Kara Van Dyke with 17 and Spronk had 13. On January 21 the Defenders went to Lincoln and won easily 78-49 after leading 46-27 at halftime. Dordt was led by Spronk’s 16 and Jessica Jelsema had 12. Shanahan put in 13 for the Wolves and Shea Rasmussen knocked down just six in the second meeting of the two.
The Defender men are 8-14 all-time against Nebraska Wesleyan with the Prairie Wolves holding a decided edge at home. Dordt’s lone win in the series in Lincoln was on January 20 of 2007. Dordt lost last year in Lincoln by a 95-84 final with the Prairie Wolves taking a 51-45 at halftime. Dordt was led by Jordan Vogel with 16 while Cliff Warner added 13. Eric Jackson scored 29 for the hosts and was 7-8 on three-point shots. Nick Dinan scored 16 while going 7-10 from the field. Earlier in the season Dordt won a 72-48 decision after getting up 35-21 at halftime. Trevor Wolterstorff scored 17 and Austin Katje added 17 with Jordan Vogel scoring nine to go with ten rebounds. Wesleyan was led by Trevor Johnson with 15 points and no one else had more than eight.
