Basketball Hosts Nebraska Wesleyan

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, January 19 in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball.  The women’s contest starts at 2:00 and the men will get underway at 4:00.   The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu. WELCOME BACK…Four members of the Dordt College men’s basketball team will return to recognized as members of the 1000  Point Club.  Last week the men’s basketball team recognized Brandon Haan and Ross Bouma, today the Defenders will recognize Terry Crull, Jerry Vande Pol, Warren Vander Pol and Dave Van Essen.

Crull scored 1,243 points and currently ranks 11th all-time. When Crull graduated in 1978 he was the 2nd leading scorer in Dordt history.   Crull also grabbed 768 rebounds and was 1st on that list when he graduated and is currently 2nd.  Crull played from 1974-1978.

Vande Pol scored 1215 points and is 12th all-time and was 3rd when he graduated in 1979.  He ranks 5th all-time in rebounding and played for the Defenders from 1975-1979.

Vander Pol scored 1083 points and is the 22nd leading scorer in Dordt history.  Vander Pol played for Dordt College from 1967-1971.

Dave Van Essen scored 1560 points from 1991-1995 and ranks 6th all-time at Dordt College.  Van Essen also ranks 3rd in rebounding with 738.

IN THE CLUB…Cliff Warner became the 30th member of the Dordt College men’s basketball 1000 Point Club when he made his fourth three-point shot against Mount Marty on Wednesday.  Warner has 1010 career points in 75 games played and currently ranks 27th all-time.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves are 1-11 this season and 3-14 overall with a win over Doane to their credit in the GPAC and non-conference decisions over Macalester on November 16 and St. Catherine on December 29. 

Wesleyan is averaging 50.9 points per game this season and allow 69.7 points per outing.  The Lincoln, Nebraska based team has a season high of 64 points scored in a game against Saint Benedict and have allowed more than 70 points on eight different occasions.  Teams are shooting 41.8 percent against the Prairie Wolves while making 31.8 percent themselves and they are getting outrebounded 41.9-37.5.  Wesleyan has turned the ball over 370 times in 17 games while opponents have given it up 316 times.

Mallory Shanahan is the leading scorer with a 15.4 points per game average to go with 9.6 rebounds and she has made 12-40 three-pointers with 20 assists, 23 blocked shots and 19 steals.  Janelle Baal is good for 6.2 points per game and leads the team with 48 assists and with 32 steals.  Baal is the leading three-point shooter in terms of baskets made with 17.  Wesleyan does not rely heavily on the long shot, having converted 56-226.  Felicia TeKolste and Kaitlyn Janata score 5.8 and 5.3 points per game respectively and Emily Leines is good for 5.3 points per game.

The Nebraska Wesleyan men are 8-9 this season and stand 3-9 in league play with wins this season over Dordt, Mount Marty and Morningside in league play.  The Wolves are 3-5 on the road and 1-5 in GPAC road games.  Wesleyan has lost four games in a row since a 61-56 win over Morningside to open 2013.  The losses in that run include a double overtime loss to Dakota Wesleyan, a five point loss on the road at Doane and a four point loss on January 16 to Briar Cliff.

The Prairie Wolves score 67.1 points per game and allow 65.6 points per outing while getting outrebounded 34.2-36.1.  Wesleyan is converting 45 percent of its shots and have converted 96-278 three-point shots.  Wesleyan has scored more than 70 points in four games this season and have allowed more than 70 points in five games and are 1-4 in those games.

Eric Jackson leads the team with a 12.8 points per game average and he is making 39.9 percent of his field goals and is 43-115 on three-point shots and has 37 assists and 19 steals.  Tim Schweitzer is averaging 9.4 points per game to go with 5.2 rebounds and he also has 37 assists this season with 18 blocked shots.  Trevor Johnson is good for 10.5 points per contest with 5.1 rebounds and he leads the team with 55.8 percent field goal shooting.  Jonah Bradley has an 8.4 points per game average and has made 23-63 three-pointers.  Byron Thompson tops the team with 56 assists. 

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 12-10 overall and 6-6 in league play and have won three of their last four outings and are 6-2 dating back to a win over Briar Cliff on December 15. The Defenders have played in ten games decided by single digits and are 4-6 in those contests.

Dordt is scoring 70.2 points per game and allow 61.6 points per contest and outrebound teams 37.5-36.5.  Dordt is holding teams to 38 percent shooting and make 41.4 percent of its field goals.  Dordt converts 36.2 percent of its three-point baskets and has defended the arc to the tune of 30.7 percent.  Dordt has 414 turnovers while opponents have 465. 

Kara Van Dyke is leading the team with a 13.4 points per game average and she leads the team with a 7.8 rebound average.  Kayla Broekhuis converts 12.4 points and has 28 steals.  Broekhuis leads the team with 44 made three-point baskets this season in 17 games played.  Brianna Spronk is scoring 11.5 points per game and Elise Maresh is good for 10.3 points per outing.  Spronk and Maresh average 5.1 and 5.7 rebounds per game respectively.  Jasmin Schelhaas and Danelle Boone score 7.2 and 6.4 respectively and have 32 and 31 made three-pointers respectively.

The Defender men have a 16-5 record and are 8-4 in league play and are in third place, one game out of first place where Northwestern and Doane are tied.  The Defenders have lost out of their last three games after putting together a six game winning streak from December 12 to January 5.  The Defenders have allowed over 71 points in each of their five losses and have been held to 70 or less in four of those losses.

Dordt is scoring 78.7 points per game and allow 68.1.  The Defenders hold a 39.5-30.8 rebounding edge and have made 49.3 percent of their field goals and opponents are making 42.2 percent.  Dordt converts 39.1 percent of the three-point shots it takes as a team and have committed 305 turnovers in 21 games to 258 for opponents.

Cliff Warner averages 15.2 points per game and has handed out 79 assists and has shares team honors in steals with Kyle Lindbergh with 25.  Warner is making 47 percent of his field goals and 83.9 percent of his free throws.  Trevor Wolterstorff is good for 14.1 points per game and converts 58 percent of his field goals and is the team leader with 6.8 rebounds per outing.  Jordan Vogel is averaging 12.1 points per game and 5.1 rebounds and he has 16 blocked shots.  Vogel makes 62.7 percent of his field goals.  Austin Katje’s average is 9.4 points per game and Chris Sievers is at 9.1 points per game.  Lindbergh is averaging 5.7 rebounds and Sievers is nabs 3.7 rebounds.

NEXT… Dordt will host Morningside on Wednesday, January 23 while Nebraska Wesleyan is scheduled to host Midland in the midweek games next week.

LAST TIME… Nebraska Wesleyan lost an 80-46 decision to Briar Cliff on Wednesday night in Lincoln after getting behind 38-26 at halftime.  Mallory Shanahan scored 18 points while Wesleyan was limited to 14-66 shooting from the floor.  Wesleyan held its own on the boards, getting 21 offensive rebounds while getting  outrebounded by a 44-42 margin.

The Defender women came from eight points down in the first half to beat Mount Marty in Yankton, South Dakota by a 70-63 margin.  Dordt  made 24-50 shots from the field and was 15-19 from the free throw line. Kayla Broekhuis scored 17 and Kara Van Dyke 16 with 11 rebounds.

The Wesleyan men trailed Briar Cliff 36-29 at halftime but couldn’t get over the top and lost 66-62.  Briar Cliff had a 42-35 rebounding edge and converted 17-30 free throws to 14-26 shooting for Nebraska Wesleyan.  Tim Schweitzer and Trevor Johnson had 14 and 10 points respectively in the loss.

Dordt’s men lost 77-60 to Mount Marty after trailing 36-30.  Dordt had one lead in the second half near the midway point of the period but couldn’t maintain the advantage.  Cliff Warner had 21 points, 18 on three-point baskets and handed out four assists.  Trevor Wolterstorff scored 13 and Kyle Lindbergh eight.    Dordt had a 39-33 rebounding advantage but was only 6-12 on free throws while Mount Marty converted 14-21 free throws.

SERIES… The Dordt women lead the series 12-7 and won the December 8 game by a 67-34 margin after getting up 34-12 at halftime.  Kayla Broekhuis had 17 points while Elise Maresh tossed in 12 points and had six rebounds.  Danelle Boone converted a trio of three-point shots as Dordt made 25-58 field goals but were outrebounded 48-44.  Nebraska Wesleyan was topped by Courtney Cook’s nine points.  Wesleyan was limited to 5-31 field goal shooting in the first half.

The Defender men trail the series with Wesleyan 15-8 and lost the game in Lincoln 71-69 in overtime.  The game was tied 61-61 at the end of regulation.  Dordt had a shot to win at the end of the overtime but missed.  Austin Katje led Dordt with 16 points while Jordan Vogel and Tyler Wolterstorff both had 11 points.  Chris Sievers and Cliff Warner both accounted for 10 points and Trevor Wolterstorff had nine points with eight rebounds.  Eric Jackson topped Nebraska Wesleyan with 19 points and five rebounds while Trevor Johnson had 17 points and seven rebounds.  Dordt had a 42-34 rebounding advantage and turned the ball over eight times to Wesleyan’s five.
