Dordt-Hastings Meet In Key GPAC Volleyball Match

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will travel to Hastings for a GPAC volleyball date on Saturday, October 19.  The junior varsity match starts at 3:30 and the varsity match at 5:00.  Results will be posted to www.dordt.edu/athletics and https://twitter.com/dcathletics and also at https://www.facebook.com/dordtdefenders .

THE OPPONENT… Hastings is 8-2 in the conference and 17-9 overall and are receiving votes in the most recent Tachikara-NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.  The Broncos have won two in a row since two setbacks to Oklahoma Baptist and Midland.  The Broncos are 3-3 in their last six matches dating back to October 4.  Hastings’s only other loss in GPAC play is at the hands of the Defenders.

Matt Buttermore’s team is averaging 12.9 kills per set with a .217 kill efficiency to go with 15.5 digs per outing.  The Broncos are getting 2.1 points per set on blocks and 1.6 on ace serves while surrendering 1.04 ace serves per contest.

Kalynn Dahlke tops the team with 3.69 kills per set and Katie Zoucha is averaging 2.45 kills per outing.  Shayna Schacher is good for 2.26 kills and Chelsey Commins puts down 1.85 per outing.  Chandelle Davidson handles the setting and assists on 9.6 kills per set and has 21 ace serves this season to go with 1.83 digs.  Dahlke is averaging 2.85 digs per contest and she has 22 ace serves this season.   Libby Kissinger is good for 3.97 digs and Taylor Jordan is good for 2.53 digs and has a team high 31 ace serves.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 17-4 overall and 8-2 in GPAC play with six matches remaining in the league.  Dordt has won six matches in a row dating back to losses to Northwestern and Nebraska Wesleyan.  The other losses for Dordt came in August when Chad Hanson’s team lost back to back five set decisions to Tabor and Viterbo.

Dordt averages 13.2 kills per set with a .296 kill efficiency.  The Defenders also get 15.74 digs and score 2.08 points per set on blocks and another 1.46 on ace serves.

Kayla Gesink lofts 10.4 assists and  puts down 1.1 kills per set with 2.5 digs and she has 11 ace serves.  Brooke Wolterstorff is averaging 3.13 kills with a .292 kill percentage and she has 23 ace serves with a 2.59 dig average.  Lindsey Floen is good for 2.85 kills and a .415 kill efficiency with a team high 1.01 blocks per outing.  Jenna Horstman is at 2.81 for a kill average and is hitting .306.  Meghan Krausman and Elizabeth Kiel add 1.87 and 1.55 kills per set.  Kayla Broekhuis leads the team with 4.9 digs per set and she has 20 ace serves.  Jocelyn Bousema also has 20 ace serves and averages 1.78 digs.  Celaine Haan leads the team with 29 ace serves.

LAST ACTION… Hastings beat Mount Marty 25-18, 27-25, 25-15 on October 13 and had 12 kills from Katie Zoucha and 11 each by Schacher and Commins.  Davidson had 43 assists and Jordan eight digs.

Dordt beat Morningside on October 16 by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18.  Horstman had 18 kills and Floen 13 while Gesink put up 47 assists and Broekhuis had 23 digs.

HISTORY… Dordt holds a 13-6 advantage in the series and is 6-5 in matches at Hastings.  Earlier this season Dordt beat Hastings on Saturday, September 21 by scores of 25-19, 25-21, 31-33, 25-17.  The Defenders were led by Floen with 14 kills and Wolterstorff with 12.  Gesink had 41 assists and 11 digs and Kayla Broekhuis had 11 digs.  Dordt totaled 10 blocks and hit for a.306 kill efficiency.

Last year’s lone meeting between the two was in Hastings on October 20 with the Broncos prevailing 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 25-18.  Kendra Schwein topped Hastings with 23 kills and Shayna Shacher, one of the few holdovers from last season, had 11 kills.  Dordt was led by Danae Geels and Floen with nine kills each while Katelyn Schuller and Krausman had eight kills each.  Gesink put up 39 assists and Broekhuis had 29 digs.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… Hastings is scheduled to travel to Morningside and Northwestern on October 25 and 26.
Dordt will host two matches in a row, hosting Briar Cliff on October 22 and Concordia on October 26.
