Dordt-Northwestern Basketball Wednesday

GAMETIME… Dordt will host Northwestern on Wednesday, January 15, in GPAC basketball. The games start at 6:00 with the women’s game and the men will start at 8:00. SCOUTING REPORT…The Northwestern Red Raider women are 17-0 overall and 9-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference while holding down the no. 2 spot in the NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll in the rankings released on January 7. Northwestern has been involved in two games that have been decided by ten points or less—an 82-73 win over Dakota State on November 20 and an 85-76 win over Dakota Wesleyan on January 8. Northwestern is 8-0 at home and 9-0 on the road.
Northwestern is averaging 93.2 points per game and allow 68.1 points per outing. Northwestern is making 47.3 percent of the field goals it takes and limits teams to 36.7 percent success from the floor. The Red Raiders are converting 36.8 percent of their three-point shots and they out rebound teams 46.2-33.7.
Alli Engebretson scores a team high 19.4 points per game with 6.9 rebounds and she is converting 41 percent of her three-point field goals. Karen Hutson scores 17.4 points per game and takes in 5.8 rebounds and Samantha Kleinsasser’s scoring average is 15.8 points per game and a team high 7.5 rebounds and she converts 53.8 percent of her field goal attempts. Mackenzie Small’s scoring average is 12.8 and she takes in 4.5 rebounds. Paige O’Neal is good for over five assists per game and she tops the team with two steals per game with a 6.0 scoring average.
The Northwestern men are 11-8 this season and 4-5 in GPAC play. Northwestern has won three games in a row since back to back losses to Midland and Doane right before the Christmas break. The Red Raiders have beaten Buena Vista, Dakota Wesleyan and Concordia in 2014 and have won all of those games at home.
Northwestern scores 76.0 points per game and is giving up 74.7 points per game. The Raiders are outrebounding teams 40.3-35.3 and they are making 44.6 percent of the field goals they attempt while limiting teams to 42.9 percent success.
Zack Leeper leads the team in scoring with a 18.3 points per game average and he also takes down 5.6 rebounds per contest. Leeper has led the team in scoring 13 times this season and he scored a season high 37 against Buena Vista on January 4. Jordan Baker scores 13.6 points per game and converts 58.7 percent of his field goals and he leads the team in rebounding with a 6.8 average. Joey Habtemariam is scoring 9.1 points per game and he tops the team in assists with right at four per game. Levi Ettleman is good for 6.8 points per game since joining the team at the conclusion of the football season and Rob Gill scores 6.5 points per game in four contests this season.
DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 9-9 in women’s basketball and 3-7 in the GPAC. Dordt snapped a three game losing streak with a win over Nebraska Wesleyan on January 11. Dordt’s other two wins in conference play are over Doane and Mount Marty.
The Defenders average 72.4 points per game with a defensive average of 72.1 points per contest. Dordt makes 41.9 percent of the field goals it takes and they are allowing 38.9 percent success for foes. Dordt has been outrebounded 38.9-38.1 and have turned the ball over 327 times in 18 games to 313 for opponents.
Kara Van Dyke is scoring 12.6 points per game while taking down 7.4 rebounds per game. Her field goal success is 45.3 percent and she is converting 83.1 percent of her free throws. Kayla Broekhuis puts in 12.1 points per game and her rebounding average is 3.6. She is making 55 percent of her field goals and 56.8 percent of her three-point baskets. Jaimie Kok is scoring 11.1 points per game and takes in 5.9 rebounds per contest. Danelle Boone’s scoring average is 7.8 and she has made a team high 32 three-point baskets.
The Defender men are 17-2 this season and 9-1 in the GPAC. Dordt got a win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday after seeing its 13 game winning streak stopped on Wednesday, January 8.
Dordt scores 90.2 points per game and allow 76.1 points per contest while outrebounding teams 43.2-29.7. The Defenders are converting 49.6 percent of the field goals they attempt and opponents are knocking down 44.2 percent of their field goals. Teams are taking over 20 three-point shots per game against Dordt while the Defenders are trying about 16 per game. Dordt has converted more free throws, 404, than their opponents have tried, 397.
Kyle Lindbergh leads a quintet of players scoring in double figures for the Defenders. Lindbergh scores 16.9 points per game and takes in a conference high 10.6 rebounds per game. He leads the team in blocked shots with 27 and steals with 21. He also is second on the team in assists with 49. Dalton Franken scores 15.8 points per game and he snares 4.6 rebounds and is converting 49.3 percent of his field goals. Austin Katje is scoring 13.6 points per game and he is grabbing 4.4 rebounds while Tyler Wolterstorff is at 10.8 points per game. Nathan Rindels scores 10.5 points per game and gets to 5.2 rebounds and he leads the team with 67 assists. David Den Herder scores 6.8 points per game with 4.3 rebounds and he is making 63.9 percent of his field goals. Alex Terpstra is good for 5.8 points per game and Bryan Sumner is at 4.1 points per game. Lindbergh has led the team in rebounding in 15 games and Katje tops the team with 42 made three-point shots in 94 attempts.
LAST TIME… The Northwestern women beat Concordia 86-68 after leading 47-32 at halftime. Engebretson had 28 points and 11 rebounds with six assists and Small added 19 points and had four steals. Northwestern had a 50-35 rebounding advantage.
Dordt beat Nebraska Wesleyan in record setting fashion on Saturday by a 115-66 decision. Dordt scored a school record 61 points in the first half and the 115 points was a single game scoring record as well. Van Dyke led seven players in double figures with 25 and Jasmin Schelhaas scored 19 with Kok tossing in 12. The Defenders converted 61.5 percent of their shots and 57.9 percent of their three-point attempts.
The Northwestern men held on for a 60-56 win over Concordia on Saturday, January 11 after leading 40-23 at halftime. Northwestern got 17 from Leeper and Baker had 13 points and ten rebounds. Northwestern made 42 percent of its field goals while limiting Concordia to 34.4 percent success.
The Dordt men led start to finish in beating Nebraska Wesleyan 66-57. Dordt was up 36-25 at halftime and converted 43.1 percent its field goals while Wesleyan made 39.7 percent of its shots. Dordt had a 42-32 rebounding advantage and converted 10-16 free throws while the visitors were just 4-8. Dalton Franken had 13 points and Rindels 12 with seven rebounds and two assists. Sumner scored 11 in a reserve role and Lindbergh had a team high 13 rebounds with four assists.
HISTORY… Northwestern leads the series 63-17 and they won the two meetings last season. The Raiders led 37-26 at halftime of the December 5 meeting in Sioux Center and won by an eventual 71-51 difference. Kendra De Jong led Northwestern with 25 and Kleinsasser had 22. Kara Van Dyke scored 22 in the loss for Dordt.
January 30 the Defenders trailed 34-33 at halftime and lost a 71-67 final with Broekhuis scoring 17 in the loss and Van Dyke added 13. De Jong and Alli Engebretson (Dunkelberger at the time), scored 18.
Northwestern leads the men’s series 76-26 but the Defenders hold an 11-10 advantage in the last nine seasons. The two teams split their meetings last season with Northwestern taking the January 30 meeting by an 89-87 count in overtime. Dordt was led by Jordan Vogel’s 27 and Katje scored 16 with six rebounds. Ben Miller scored 24 for the Raiders and Daniel Van Kalsbeek scored 18.
The Defenders won the first meeting by a final of 64-56 after trailing 33-26 at halftime. Dordt got 19 from Trevor Wolterstorff and Katje scored 16. Miller and Van Kalsbeek each had 14.
NEXT… Dordt will go to Doane on Saturday, January 18 in Crete, Nebraska while Northwestern has an open date before returning to play
RANKINGS…. The Dordt College men are no. 5 in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll released on Tuesday, January 7. GPAC members Midland and Hastings are no. 8 and no. 17 respectively.
Six GPAC teams are ranked in the top-25 and another is receiving votes in the poll. Northwestern is no. 2; Concordia no. 7; Morningside no. 9; Hastings no.10; Briar Cliff no. 23 and Dakota Wesleyan is receiving votes.
