Leanna Bentz and Ivory Niewenhuis present music recital April 4

March 31, 2014

Dordt College presents the music recital of juniors Leanna Bentz of Platte, South Dakota, and Ivory Niewenhuis of Corsica, South Dakota, on Friday, April 4. Beginning at 3 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium, Bentz will perform on the euphonium and Niewenhuis on the organ. A reception will follow.

Selections from Bentz’s repertoire include Concerto for Euphonium by Ewazen, Fantaisie in E flat by Barat, and Fantasia by Gordon Jacob, a soldier in WWI whose music was inspired by his time in a prisoner of war camp. Bentz will be accompanied by Pam De Haan on piano. A choral and instrumental music education major, Bentz takes private lessons from Vance Shoemaker.

Niewenhuis will perform a piece by Baroque composer Dietrich Buxtehude and two songs by French contemporary composer Jean Langlais. One of the Langlais songs is a pedal solo, and the other is a musical representation that unfolds the mystery of the resurrection on Easter morning. A communication major, Niewenhuis takes private lessons from Matthew Geerlings.

Of the 1,400 students who attend Dordt College, approximately 300 participate in the music program, which offers opportunities to perform in choral groups, orchestra, and band. Music scholarships are available to qualified students. Learn more about music opportunities available at
