READ poster reveal kicks off National Library Week
April 14, 2014
Kicking off National Library Week, the Dordt College John and Louise Hulst Library revealed the newest READ poster featuring a Dordt “celebrity.”
This year’s celebrity is Dordt College History Professor Dr. Paul Fessler. A life-long New York Mets fan, Fessler is pictured wearing his Johan Santana Mets jersey and holding a history book about America’s favorite pastime.
While he loves both history and baseball, Fessler’s favorite book, Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree, is about neither. “This is the first book that I remember my dad reading to me. I loved it as a kid and still love it now,” says Fessler. “Now, when I read it with my family at Christmas, I can hear the voice of my father who passed away on Christmas morning 1997. It’s more than a great book—it’s a memory.”
Dordt’s College’s annual tradition of revealing a new celebrity is based on similar posters put out by the American Library Association, which features celebrities holding books with the caption “READ.”
The library is also hosting the popular Edible Book Contest on Friday, April 18. The contest, held for the first time in partnership with the Sioux Center Public Library, is open to anyone who brings an edible entry to Dordt’s library on Friday between 7:30 and 10 a.m. Entries can refer to a scene or a character from a book, look like a book, or just have something to do with books. The contest is open to all amateur bakers, cooks, and decorators (no professionals, please). All viewers are welcome to cast a vote for the People’s Choice entry from 10 to 11 a.m. and noon to 1:30 p.m. in the library’s Study Café. The library will be closed from 11 a.m. to noon for a Good Friday Chapel.
The results of your voting will determine the winner of the People’s Choice Award. Judges will determine the winners in the Best Tasting and Best Overall categories. The winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m., after which forks will be handed out and everyone will be invited to taste the entries.
