Building Community Into Family

For Brianna Evink, it’s the community at Dordt that has made her experience so great. She says the close-knit community grows out of the learning environment created from having smaller class sizes. “When you are in smaller classes—which happens especially in upper-level courses—you get close enough to the students and professors that you become like family.”

Brianna is involved in many campus activities and helps create new opportunities for students. Because she loves swing dancing, she invited others to join her in the Rec Center to learn some “swinging” moves. It has since become a regular event. Sharing her passion with others created a unique opportunity to get to know even more students.

A psychology major with a pre-physical therapy emphasis, Brianna also enjoys helping other students with their studies. As one of many tutors in Dordt’s ASK Center (Academic Skills Center), she appreciates the way tutors care about other students. “I enjoy watching students from the moment they first come in to when they get that ‘aha’ moment of realization.”

Brianna keeps busy in other ways, too. She is president of the Pre-Physical Therapy Club, a member of the Dordt women’s soccer team, and a participant in intramural sports.

From early childhood, Brianna knew that Dordt was the place for her. She says she felt God leading her to Dordt and knew it would be right for her. She admits wondering, at first, why she would want to go from a big city to a small-town college, but now she views Dordt like home. “The people here create a strong community environment because of how welcoming they are.”
