Through Water and Fire—Fulfilling His Calling

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” (Isaiah 43:2)

To a boy growing up in harsh conditions in India, these words from Isaiah 43 were more precious than silver or gold. Despite setbacks throughout his life, God’s Word always gave David Puruolte the strength and comfort he needed. He knew the Lord had a special calling for his life; he just wasn’t sure what that calling was.

Back in India, David never could have imagined ending up where he is today. Denied a visa four times before finally receiving permission to come to America, David counts simply being in this country as a blessing. Having gone from a life of impoverishment to living and studying at a Christian college like Dordt, David sees his education at Dordt as a genuine testament to the amazing love and faithfulness of God.

David believes it is his calling to share God’s message with others, and Dordt’s theology department is helping him do so. He travels with Dordt’s Praise and Worship team and gets involved in local church ministries. David is grateful for the community of students and faculty who have provided the opportunities for him to learn and grow in what he’s passionate about.

Dordt has truly been a community for David. In classes, dorms, chapel, intramurals, and everywhere else, “people really are on fire for the Lord, and are there for you whenever you need someone to fall back on,” he says. Dordt is more than just a school, but a home away from home. It’s a place where he can share God’s message with others and at the same time receive the assistance and encouragement to continue fulfilling God’s calling for his life—day by day making the words of Isaiah all the more dear to his heart.
