Students create street mural for Sioux Center RAGBRAI

July 19, 2012

As RAGBRAI riders depart from Sioux Center on Sunday, July 22, they’ll be bid farewell by a street mural featuring the town’s RAGBRAI logo and theme, It’s Downhill from Here. The mural came together with the help of several Dordt College students.

Senior photography major Jordan Edens (Kennewick, Washington) coordinated much of the project, created the 10 stencils, and spray painted the road. Sophomore English major Hannah De Vries of (Ham Lake, Minnesota) and Edens cut the stencils out of oversized pieces of cardboard.

“It is very cool to see all this hard work come to life,” said Edens.

The road was blocked off for several hours on Wednesday, July 18, to complete the mural. Others offering their spray painting skills were senior elementary education major Allison Kraayenbrink (Sioux City, Iowa), and Sonya Jongsma Knauss, director of marketing and PR at Dordt College.

Sioux Center RAGBRAI has been a large undertaking that required the work of many people and Sioux Center businesses. Dordt College students, faculty, and staff have participated in the effort by providing housing for more than 500 people as well as tent spaces for many more, by offering around-the-clock volunteer staff, and by serving with other community members on a variety of committees.
