THE FOE…This is the season opener for the Hastings Broncos after a 6-4 season last year and a 5-4 GPAC mark.

The Broncos return Keenan Ballage at running back after he gained 808 yards on 206 carries last season.  Also returning is John Dostal, the starting quarterback from last season.  Dostal threw for 1,279 yards and completed 117 passes with ten touchdowns and ran for another touchdown and had 383 rushing yards on 87 attempts.  Dostal’s favorite target from 2011 is back as well in tight end Zane Anstine.  Anstine caught 25 passes for 276 yards and he had a touchdowns.

While Hastings returns several players on offense, their defense will look markedly different with the Broncos’ top six tacklers not listed on their opening day two-deep depth chart.  Garrett Griffeth brings back the most experience with ten games played, three interceptions, 17 solo tackles and 16 assisted stops.  The Broncos also need to replace their placekicker and punter from 2011.

THE DEFENDERS…Dordt is 0-1 this season.

The Defenders gained 4.8 yards per rushing attempt but gave up 6.4 yards per rushing attempt in the first game of the year.  Courtney Samuel gains 5.4 yards per carry and Bryce Rusler 4.3.  Trai Pickney has six carries for a 6.2 average and Daniel Fennig had three totes on Saturday for a 5.3 yards per carry.  David Griess (3) and Trai Pickney (2) are the only Defenders with more than one catch heading into the second game of the season.  Bryce Rusler was 7-22 in the air for 47 yards last week.

The Warriors scored again on the next drive and then returned an interception for a touchdown to make it 34-7 in the third quarter and tacked on a field goal and touchdown run in the fourth for the final.

HISTORY…Dordt and Hastings have played four times with Hastings winning all four meetings.  Last year’s September 10 meeting resulted in a 28-14 win for the Broncos.  Hastings got two touchdowns in the second quarter , one of them after Dordt turned it over deep in its own territory and the hosts cashed in on an 18 yard field for a touchdown.  Sam Du Mez caught a Justin Knot pass to cap an 81 yards drive with one minute left in the half to trail 14-7.  Hastings tacked on a touchdown midway through the third quarter.  Dordt made a game of it with an 81 yard drive capped by a David Griess 12 yard reception with 3:52 left to make it 21-14.  Hastings recovered the ensuing onside kick and scored one play later to make the final 28-14.
