Volleyball Plays Four In Hastings

WHAT TIME DO WE NEED TO BE THERE… If your’e following the Defenders this weekend you’ll need to be on the road early Friday to make Hastings, Nebraska by first serve of the first match.  Dordt faces The College of the Ozarks at 2:00 and Grand View at 6:00.  Saturday the Defenders will play McPherson at 11:00 and Peru State at 2:00. RIVALS…Dordt opens play against the College of the Ozarks, a team that has started the season with a 4-5 record.  After dropping four matches in a row to start the season the Bobcats have bounced back with wins in four of their last five matches.  The Branson, Missouri based school is led by Mariah Chapman with a 3.8 kills per set average and she boasts a .328 kill efficiency.  Lindsay Boone puts up 7.1 assists per set and Brianna Winn leads the team with 11 service aces.

Hayley Blair leads the team with 5.1 digs per outing.  As a team Ozarks is averaging 15.6 digs and 11.7 kills per outing.
The #8 ranked team in the country, the Grand View Vikings, is 7-1 this season and have won seven decisions in a row. 

The Vikings have fared well against the GPAC, owning wins over Morningside, Midland, Briar Cliff and Concordia.  Devon Jensen is at 3.92 kills per set and Kadie Subbert is good for 3.0 kills with a .370 kill efficiency.  The Des Moines, Iowa based school  is led in assists by Paige Harris with a 6.04 average and Molley Scanlon is at 4.91.  Jenson is also the leading digger with a 4.4 average. 

The McPherson Bulldogs enter play with a 1-4 record with a season opening win over Central Methodist followed by four match losing skid.  Aubrey Hoover is at 2.67 kills per set and Tori Phelan is good for 2.42.  Hannah Hoffman is averaging 3.8 assists per set in a 6-2 offense and Tiffany Rooker is tops on the team with five digs per set.

Peru State is 1-6 this season with a win over Waldorf to its credit.  Tara Gonzalez averages 2.48 kills and Brittany Peterson 1.92.  Courtney Jurek is averaging 4.48 assists and Emily Maresh leads the team with 6.12 digs per outing.

THE DEFENDERS…are 7-2 this season and 1-0 in GPAC play.  Dordt is averaging 11.89 kills per outing and with 1.47 ace serves per set.  Defensively Dordt is good for 14.69 digs per outing and 3.15 blocks at the net.  Lindsey Floen and Danae Geels average 2.25 and 2.17 kills per set and Loy Sahr is at 2.0.  All three have improved their numbers with the absence of Katelyn Schuller due to a sprained ankle.  Kayla Gesink is averaging 8.72 assists and 1.0 kills with 12 service aces.  Jenna Horstman has stepped in and accounts for 1.94 kills per outing.

Jocelyn Bousema is the team leader in ace serves with 16 and averages 1.67 digs per contest.  Kayla Broekhuis tops the team with 4.08 digs and she has nine ace serves.  Jana Van Zanten has 10 service aces and 2.11 digs.  Lindsey Floen is the leader on defense at the net with a 1.53 blocks per set average.

LAST ACTION…The College of the Ozarks were 25-15, 25-17, 25-13 winners on Tuesday night over Central Baptist behind Hannah Meadows 11 kills and Mariah Chapman had ten kills.  Boone put up 26 assists and Blair had ten digs.

Grand View handled Concordia last weekend in the Bellevue Classic by a 3-1 margin.  Game scores were 25-20, 24-26, 25-12, 25-13.  Subbert had 15 kills and Jensen 11 while Harris put up 23 assists and Iwa Beliserio had a match high 26 digs.

McPherson lost to Tabor (Kansas) on Wednesday night 25-12, 25-11, 25-23.  Hoover had nine kills and Hoffman put up seven assists in the loss. Rooker topped all players with 16 digs in the loss.

Peru State lost to Missouri Valley on Tuesday by a count of 25-10, 26-24, 25-18.  Peterson had seven kills and Nelson put down five while Jurek accounted for 19 assists and Maresh got to 19 digs.

Dordt opened GPAC play with a 3-2 win over Briar Cliff on Wednesday night, scoring the final four points of set five to win 15-12.  Danae Geels and Loy Sahr had 10 kills each while Lindsey Floen and Jenna Horstman each had eight.  Floen also was in on nine blocks and Kayla Gesink had 38 assists and 15 digs. 

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE…The College of the Ozarks will travel to face Texas Wesleyan and John Brown on Monday, September 10.

Grand View plays a weekend classic again next weekend in Florida and will face Georgetown (Kentucky), Embry Riddle, Indiana East and Campbellsville.

McPherson is scheduled to face Bethany (Kansas) in conference play on Tuesday, September 11.

Peru State goes to Benedictine (Kansas) for a conference match on Tuesday, September 11.

Dordt will be on the road Wednesday night in Mitchell, South Dakota facing the Dakota Wesleyan and then open the home season on Friday night, September 14 against Mayville State in a non-conference match.
