Cross Country At Woody Greeno Invite

Participants… A total of 32 teams and 739 runners are scheduled to compete in the annual event. Teams from all levels of competition will be running. Six NCAA Division I teams, eight NCAA II teams, two NCAA III teams, 10 NAIA teams and six junior colleges will be running on Saturday.
Last Year… The Dordt College women finished fifth in the team race and the men ninth at the Woody Greeno Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, September 17.
Renee Buikema led the Defenders with a 17th place time of 23:27 while Michelle Steiger and Merissa Harkema finished 24th and 25th in times of 23:48 and 23:49. Lillie Koerner and Lauren Opp completed the Dordt scoring with times of 24:02 and 24:35 over the 6,000 meter course for 33rd and 45th place. Dordt's total was 144 points.
Seventeen teams made up the field with 113 runners competing. Morningside won the team race with 75 poitns. Angela Adams from Northwest Missouri State won the event in 21:42.
The men from Dordt placed ninth with 250 points against 21 teams.
Ryan Tholen's time of 26:41 was good for 21st place while Eric Tudor and Nathan Jackson were tight at 27:13 and 27:18 for 43rd and 47th respectively. Jeremy Van Woerden and Derek Opp ran next to each other as well for 69th and 70th in 27:54 and 27:55.
Nebraska Wesleyan scored the team title with 66 points and Al Sanabria finished first from 139 runners with a time of 24:47 over the 8,000 meter course.
Last Time… Running in the dark on Friday night, August 31, the Dordt College Defender women's cross country team had a strong showing at an invite hosted by Augustana in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. No team points were kept at the event.
Dordt was led by Lauren Opp with a seventh place time of 17:28 and Merissa Harkema was right with her in eighth place, less than a second behind.
Renee Buikema was 14th in 18:01 and Katie Bonnema recorded an 18:06 for 18th and Lillie Koerner was 19th in 18:08.
114 runners competed in the event with Runa Fulch from Augustana winning the three mile race in 16:26.
The men also competed and Dordt's first runner across was Ryan Tholen in 20:25, good for 28th. Tim Bierma was right behind in 29th with a time of 20:26 and Chris Postma ran 41st in a time of 20:55. Nathan Jackson and Derek Opp concluded the five runners for the Defenders with times of 21:07 and 21:10 respectively for 49th and 52nd place over the four mile course.
The men's division had 147 runners. The race was won by Augustana's Paul Yak in 19:21.
Next…Dordt will next compete in the Roy Griak Invite in the Twin Cities on Saturday, September 29.
